A few years ago my accountant said I couldn't deduct cat boarding costs incurred because I had to travel for work. I disagreed with him but never pressed it because its only come up once. (The cat has two staff now)

What weird things do you deduct as work related travel expenses? :)

If there are people here who are executives at the Health Services Union, this thread could be fascinating!

I suppose it's not an 'unusual' travel related tax deduction, but I'm not sure if many people consider it.

A few years a prior to achieving Gold status on *A, I purchased a CO Presidents Club annual membership to gain lounge access and claimed it as a tax deduction (because the lounges were considered 'a place of work'). ;)

(I'm not sure if there have been any changes in the tax rules since then; if you do consider doing then then please check with your tax agent prior!)

I must say any thing I can do to reduce my tax is a good thing , I like the idea of getting a tax break from sending the kids to Cat Med ( kids being Jack and Missy who have no idea they are cats )

I did the same - 99% of the flying I do is for business, and whilst I may relax with a beer (or 3) or a whiskey in the lounge, I also have to check emails, print out changes to schedules etc, etc. (I've never actually had to do this without lounge access - the mind boggles as to how I'd actually achieve it!!!???)

The logical extension to this, of course is that if you can prove you took a series of flights for no reason other than to gain status with the airline, acquiring lounge access on business trips - surely the fare cost of the status run should be deductible?

The Commissioner cant tell you how to spend your money.

I claim for kennels for the dog(s) if the trip is work-related. I don't use an accountant, that way they can't tell me what to do. I use the "reasonable person test" not the "accountant test". If I can claim for parking my car at the airport, then I can claim for parking my dog at the kennels.

Hmmm.... wonder if I can claim my ANZ Platinum Visa fee because it gives me free travel insurance? Never thought of that.
