We are flying on a QF ticket from Vienna through to Darwin, arriving into LHR on the 7th Jan at 8:30pm scheduled to depart on the 8th at 9:15pm.

Our flights have been changed, originally in London for 23:15 hours, now we have 24:45 hours.

Considering we haven't applied for any visas, am I stuck at the airport for 24 hours?

The UK visa website talks about transits under waiver for less that 24 hours... Can I wait 45 mins before going through UK customs to meet the 24 hour rule.

Anyone have advise?

Thank you kindly!

Passport issued by which country?
If you get to UK immigration within 45 minutes you are doing well!

If you are coming to the UK for a short visit (up to 6 months), you generally do not need a visa. However, you should bring documents with you to show our immigration officers when you arrive at the UK border.
The Visiting the UK section describes the different categories of visitor visa, and lists the types of document that you may want to provide. It also explains the conditions of your stay as a visitor.
Although you do not need a visa, you may want to obtain one before you travel (for example, if you have a criminal record or you have previously been refused permission to enter the UK). And youwill need a visa if you want to come here in some categories of visitor (such as a visitor for marriage or civil partnership). The Visiting the UK section contains more information.

Thanks Tony, I did peruse that, however it is truly, truly confusing in a weird pommy kind of way.

My take is that if you do not have a criminal record, have not been refused permission to enter the UK previously, and you are not traveling to the UK to marry then you do not need a Visa.

Have been to the UK a bunch of times travelling on an Aussie passport and have never needed a visa. You'll be fine.

Yes, Australians are surprisingly well received by immigration in the UK. (although a dig about the ashes is quite possible!)
