Hello all
Long time lurker - first time poster.
I am close to getting silver status with Qantas. I have till June to get 20 status points to reach silver.
I was considering taking a flight from Sydney somewhere and back in a day to minimise cost / avoid an overnight stay but that seems a bit of a waste.

Any tips or suggestions.

Regards :)

Firstly welcome aboard shufflingfeet .

My first question is what benefit do you perceive Silver as offering? However, if you've decided that you really want to attain that level then 20SCs is easy to get. A simple SYD-MEL return flight, easily done in a day is all you need.

As you note it does seem a bit of a waste just to get PS but bum in seat flying is the only way to get status.

Still hope you hang around here and maybe one day you'll be seeking the final 20SCs to attain WP (aka Platinum). :)

If you coincide the SYD-xx_-SYD flight with another activity (football, museum or lunch with a friend) the day trip seems much more rewarding.

I'm looking forward to the post in 12 months time where you're looking for a few SC's to attain gold.

Welcome to the addiction.

It starts innocently enough. Just a few status credits for silver. Then the letter arrives, a nice silver card. Some bag tags and a couple of passes to the QP.
Suddenly you have "Status". It's not long before you we hanging out in terminals, catching crazy late night flights , touting for a guest spot , then when it's too late, you realize you are hooked, you have SAF. ( status afflicted flying) there is no known cure , even brief lapses in status create severe withdrawal symptoms, so you resort to wine tours, and casual drinks in cities that need a flight to attend, lunch dates in AKL. With other afflicted flyers. You finally realize you are beyond redemption when FA's nudge and giggle as you re board the plane back to where you just came from. ✈️
Happy flying.

If all it takes is 20 status credits, I'd recommend just doing a quick SYD-MEL return.. If you have until June I'm sure you can find an excuse for a weekend get away or day trip. However as HVR has said, it's only worth it if you know you want it... But welcome to the club of chasing status

Cheapest way would be JQ return SYD-AVV with Plus bundle, I suspect, but AVV is inconvenient, and it's JQ. Probably more worthwhile to make it into a proper weekend trip if you can afford it!

if you have a partner, take them on a short trip! looking at prices its going to cost a minimum of 140 on JQ + the bundle $20??. to AVV. not much more to either ballina (byron bay) coffs or gold coast

Go to Canberra early morning and see some of the galleries / museums and suck in the culture, have a late lunch and few drinks, then depart late afternoon / early evening same day.

Flight is short and there are heaps of times available (it is like a shuttle service) and you've become more 'cultural' in the process.

But be warned as already pointed out ... we all were once Bronze, then Silver ... then Platinum and then trying to work out how to keep Platinum for the next year. Then the disease spreads to hotels. Then you start looking at new jobs and if they offer an ability to grow your SC balance as you start to focus on lifetime QF status. Then once that is achieved you start to look at other airlines / programs. It is truly a sickness that has no cure but in truth is a lot of fun along the way if you treat it as a game.
