Hi friends,
Currently in Japan and Mrs Excel is getting ready to invest in many art supplies, lots of which aren't available or are significantly cheaper than in Perth.
Question as to whether anyone has travelled with a significant amount before and had any issues putting things in checked baggage.
Will most likely be watercolours (tubes), alcohol markers (Copic or similar) and stationary.
I foresee no issues with the stationary, it's the watercolours and markers I'm worried about. Despite being water based (the paints) and effectively textas (the markers), I'm worried they may be confiscated. They're somewhat pricey so we won't want to lose them.
Any volatile substances like mediums, oil based paints etc we won't try to bring home.
Flying CX via HKG to MNL, then SQ to SIN and PER. (tr to follow eventually)
Any advice appreciated.

I would definitely double bag the paints and textas just in case of spillage. I always travel with about a dozen large zip lock bags for " just in case "

I cant see why they would be confiscated.

Dont miss a 100 yen shop - they have FANTASTIC stuff that you didnt know you needed ;);)

We returned to Perth a few days ago from Taiwan travelling on CX. We purchased 3 framed prints from an art museum in Tainan, who wrapped the goods in cardboard boxes and bubble wrap. At checkin, they were obviously too boxy to be allowed as carry on, but we asked for special handling and they placed fragile and priority stickers on the package. They did ask me to sign a disclaimer in case of damage. On arrival in Perth, not only was the package the 1st off the plane, undamaged, but our suit cases followed in 3rd and 4th place! I'm sure if you advise of your goods at checkin, CX at least and probably SQ will look after your bags as well as possible in the big scheme of things.

I can't imagine they will be a problem in checked baggage.
But have a look here for CX policies.
And here for SQ.
As far as I can see only FLAMMABLE paints would be prohibited.
Water colours are obviously not flammable.

I’ve taken watercolours and markers in check-in on many domestic and international flights without a problem. I often carry copic markers in my carry-on too. If you take lead-based white oil paint... well, that’s where you start encountering problems because it comes up as a solid lump on the security screen. Everyone starts freaking out.

Edit: sorry, misread. Thanks :)

Thanks everyone for your advice - just to close this out, everything made it home safely. Copic (alcohol) markers in carry on; rest in checked. I printed off the MDS for both the watercolours and some acrylic gouache Mrs excel bought and left those with the tubes in the checked luggage, but there's no indication they were opened, let alone searched.
