Just wondering if I am an Aust Passort I dont need a transit visa and can leave the airport? Is there anything I need to do? Transit is 10 Hrs. Flights are MEL-LAX-LHR on United

I think the question should be, why on earth are you making that connection and flight, especially with United??!

Easy enough to apply for the new electronic visa waiver. it's not really an issue. Anyway, everyone HAS to go landside these days.
You can hang around the airport, have a steak upstairs in TBIT at Daily Grill, watch a few planes ...; or get a bed in one of the nearby hotels for the day; or go sight seeing for the day - sunset blvd, the tar pits, Venice Beach, then a steak before boarding.
have a fun trip, & let us know what you end up doing

Oh is the daily grill good? The burgers in admirals club were surprisingly ok.

Visa waiver costs what 25 bucks or so and is done on line at home. Then you can go out of the airport or on a holiday with no issues. I took my receipt but you don't need to actually show anything at LAX as it is managed electronically.

Yes an unusual route. It might make for interesting views of Canada and Greenland though.

Because it is $300 cheaper than QF and I can say I have been to America PMSL

Should I just pay the extra $300 and go QF China Eastern are cheapest but have been told to stay away from them

No such thing as "International Transit" at US airports.. (other than NZ's special arrangement at LAX for through pax to/from LHR)

You will pass through Immigration/Customs as if LAX was your destination....

I always enjoy the Daily Grill. Steak ( usually get the hanger steak) big pile of good mash potato, 1/2 a broccoli , glass of red. Comfort food! Havn't had the burger. Should have yesterday as my late flight on AA in F didn't have a meal service :(
