Hi,

I am flying trans-Tasman MEL-WLG return and was wondering if folks think it's worthwhile to upgrade? I have access to QC through a couple of vouchers, but I could also upgrade. It looks as though the place is a 737-800 with recliner rather than lie-flats and I'll be travelling at 1030am...are the J seats worth the 20k points?

Thanks

If you have access to the QC/J lounge and you're on the 737, unless you have some real need for the extra "little" bit of room, I don't think I would bother

I'm from the comfort is best camp. If you have squillions of points, why not upgrade , to do it often.
If you're points poor, maybe use them elsewhere.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I don't have squillions - 300K or so but they're not *that* hard to get...Mrs. CC is a bit grumpy though, as she's no doubt looking at another rtw :)

Keep Mrs happy and save your points for a rtw. It's only 3ish hours and the food is fine. QF economy is like flying most intra European J

Round the world would be much better use of points.

My attitude on the 737s on shorter routes such as PER<->ADL is that if work books me a flexi fare and it's only 10,000 points to upgrade I will do it.
If I'm on a discount economy fare and it's 25,000 or whatever the enhanced rate is, then I won't upgrade.
However I guess you will be flying jetconnect and I have no idea how (or if) that affects the soft product.

I've done trans-Tasman flights dozens of times and am happy either in J or Y. The only times I will book or upgrade to J are the return flights in the afternoon / evening (the flights over are so quick it isn't worth it) or the redeye over from MEL-AKL (so I can either sleep a bit more comfortably or stay up and work/relax without feeling too guilty about disturbing others).

Food and drink in Y are perfectly fine, so I'd probably agree with the consensus above of stick to Y.

As others have said I would stay in Y the 737 J product is not worth it. Try for emergency exit seats row 13 or 14 if you can. Oh and row 14 is better as it has recline row 13 doesn't.

At WLG the QP is not that crowded, you will get seats and a table but food is still small bights no toasted sandwich maker there. The food offering at WLG is mostly landside, very little airside on the international side.
For the MEL-WLG sector economy may be full depending upon how many people connect from EK and QF international flights. I do not know how bad the MEL QP is but if you upgraded the MEL-WLG sector you
will have access to the EK lounge, which is infinitely more better than the QP at SYD.
Finally I hope you enjoy your stay at WLG.:)

I'm with others - I'll upgrade a Flex fare for 11,000 points, but the Saver upgrade of 20,000 points just isn't worth it for me.

I do have a AKL-SYD in mid-July on an A330 with Business Suites which I'm toying up the idea of upgrading, but I really don't think it's even worth it for the better widebody product. When I consider my ongoing SYD-CGK is an 8 hour flight and 30k points to upgrade, spending 20K for a flight less than 3 hours just doesn't make sense for me

Thanks all for the tips - I didn't end up going for the upgrade however I am now booked on another SYD-WLG flight tomorrow and as I did my knee on the weekend, put in for (and got) an upgrade to J for the 1850 departure. It's my third flight to NZ in six weeks, I can't be stufffed for the 11K points. My return is EK407 which I can usually find good seats, so will stay in Y. Thanks for all the info, I am looking forward to the upgrade, recliner as it may be.

happy trails and thanks for all the info, you guys rock

Sorry to hear about your injury, see if you can get a row 1 seat at OLCI or at the airport as that has a little more room.
I know it is a bit of a walk but head to the EK lounge, which opens at 4:15 instead of going to the QF Lounge, much better.
