Tokyo Haneda slot - how will Virgin Operate it?

Seems like tonight's VA78 HND-CNS is delayed until tomorrow morning.

I have a friend on this flight and they have not received any communication from VA until they arrived at the airport and the self-checkin kiosk said "you're not booked on any flights".
Well that's a bit rubbish! I would

Well that is rather poor. I assume VA have allocated a hotel at Haneda? They are not doing their reputation much good on this a major international flight route! Poor show VA.

I'm informed by my friend there that everyone is still waiting for confirmation regarding a hotel from ground staff, although they've been promised one. I assume most ground staff there is contracted, so it's taking a while.

I think it's understandable to have disruption for Haneda routes after the accident two days ago, however Virgin has had plenty of time to notify customers about this which they have evidently failed to do.

Hotel granted - overnight in HND tonight, VA78 tomorrow, then another hotel in Cairns tomorrow night, then CNS-xBNE-xSYD-ADL on Saturday. Looks like overall travel time HND-ADL will be... quite long.

Sadly expertflyer is down right now so I can't check why the routing is so cursed.

Considering I got basically the same when my QF10 got delayed by a full day a couple months back I’d say nothing out of the ordinary for airlines down under. Except in that case they were on the hook for UK261 whereas outside of that jurisdiction we have bugger all.

Was it a coincidence that your friend took a photo with the Virgin sign in the background?

Well, it's expected that the sign would be in the background if you're taking the photo whilst waiting in the Virgin check-in queue (there's a long line whilst everyone is processed).

Heh, laughing at the letter, just have to add the missing bits by hand (writing).
Not laughing at the situation that occurred at HND mind you.
Says something about an airline when staff have generic preprepared excuse letter on hand to “fill in the blanks” by hand at the gate.

[OT] Given the recent not “on time performance” will there be a paper shortage at all Australian airports 😉

There is a paper shortage. Has been one for months.
Work removed locally made printer paper ages ago and got a new overseas supplier because the Australian paper manufactures have been unable to keep up with the demand for paper products.

Update. They spent the night in a Haneda Airport hotel, checked in bags and went through immigration this morning, only to have VA78 this morning cancelled again last minute. Currently stuck airside and VA are working on rebooking. I assume they'll have to be escorted back through immigration etc.

Going back empty? Transponder is on and it’s live on the ground at Haneda? Looks like it’s going.

Oh why was it cancelled?
No reason given

Yeah I'm curious what's going on there. Guess we'll see if it ends up taking off. Maybe not enough cabin crew?

edit: Looks like it's pushed back and is moving. I suppose it really is departing empty! How strange. In theory they should have two sets of cabin crew available, right? The crew that was in Tokyo last night which was supposed to operate last night's flight, and also the crew that arrived in from Cairns last night who should be rested by now.

edit2: Friends have been rebooked. One on NH HND-SYD tonight, others on SQ HND-xSIN-ADL tonight. Overheard that some other pax may have to travel to Narita to catch a flight there or stay one more night.

I’d call a NH to SYD an upgrade!
