Hi All,

Mrs dejium are moving to Toronto in a couple of months, and yesterday booked our one way flights: PER-MEL-SYD-DFW-YYZ (final leg on AA). Taking advantage of the transit rules, we have about 15 hours in MEL and 23 hours in DFW (SYD is only 3 hrs).

Like some recent posts, my question is in regards to QF/AA allowances and how/if bags get through checked. Our ticket states, as per standard allowances to the Americas, 2 bags for each flight. My reading of the QF Checked Baggage Allowance page is that a 3rd bag is included for QP, PS and SG. This is ok for the QF legs, but does this also apply to the AA flight?

The complicating factor I see is that we will have to collect bags at DFW and redeposit them after customs. With such a long transit, would all 3 bags be marked with the final destination & be accepted for redeposit immediately, or would we be forced to take our bags and recheck them the following day (and possibly pay for the 3rd bag)?

Then there are these couple of lines from the QF Checked Baggage Allowance page, which seem to conflict:
1. For travel other than from the USA and where your ultimate destination is not within the USA
Different baggage allowances may apply each time you check-in your baggage. If you check in your baggage for a multiple sector journey, the baggage policy of the most significant carrier in the itinerary will apply.

2. For travel to, from or within the USA
Under US DOT regulations, if your travel to, from or within the USA involves one or more airlines with flights that do not have a "QF" flight number, the airline whose flight number appears first on your ticket will determine whether its baggage rules or another airline's baggage rules will apply to all the flights in your itinerary. For travel between Australia and the USA, usually (but not always) Qantas' baggage rules will apply.

I guess it all comes down to the definition of "check in" if the 3rd bag is a "baggage rule" or just a QF benefit on QF flights.

What are other's experiences in this type of situation?

Usually I would never travel with so many bags, but as we're moving, this will be an easier and faster way of getting a bit more of our stuff to Canada than shipping.

The 3rd bag is a QF benefit on QF metal only as QF do not publish the extra allowances for elites to ATPCO. It's suspected QF have done this on purpose to avoid having to pay other airlines for extra bags for their elites.

I'm not aware of DFW being able to store bags overnight either so you may need to pay for the 3rd bag when it is redeposited at DFW the next day.

As this question is in regards to the scope of QFF and Qantas Club baggage allowance benefits, I have moved to the QFF forum.
