When a girl wants fish for dinner, she just has to grab the bottles with the line, and catch 'em! ;)

My office from a couple of weeks ago. Buna (Bloody Buna from the PNG campaign of 1942). We are bringing in a new guest haus location (clearing a new field) and I was litterally shocked at the amount of spent and unspent war ammunition that was lying in the fairly small field. Every square metre was littered with it. We've all heard the stories, but it really drove home to me just how terrifying it must have been, seeing the magnitude of it, still lying there 76 years on.

And I forgot to add that it was not just ammunition. This is a skeleton. To their credit, the guys have notified the Japanese Consulate as the Japanese Gov't are currently repatriating as many of their dead as they can. There was a recent discovery off the Kokoda Track of a number of Japanese remains. They are DNA testing, so I'd assume if the remains belong to either an Australian, American or Papuan, the Japanese would notify the respective Government.

None of those are live. The .303 was but they are not silly people. They put a fire across the land first, to explode most of the live rounds. The .303 actually kept the bullet intact and blew out the side of the case (as there was no barrel to contain the case and direct the explosive force forward).

We did a talk with the kids about the dangers of live ammunition and also the dangers of stray bullets when the fire is set as there are plenty that go off!

Not sure about PNG but still in the Solomons the commonest cause of loss of a hand or arm in a young male is handling unexploded ordinance.
