Hi Folks

About to head to the US on Thursday and my diet has changed since my last long haul.

I now follow a high protein diet and avoid wheat and other grains. Not that I can't eat them, but I do get very hungry at times.

Most meals have a good selection of meats and veges but, what sort of snacks should I expect on QF15 to LAX in PE (J if upgrade request comes through). Would talking my own ham and cheese cause any quarantine issues?

Cheers

Pretty much you can take aboard any foodstuffs you like. You will just have to ditch any leftovers prior to arrival. And good luck on the upgrade request to J :)

As mentioned it should not be an issue to take onboard your own food.

It's fine to take food on a flight for your own consumption, however perhaps pungent items such as durian may cause an issue.

The main thing to be aware of is when you arrive that your food doesn't violate quarantine laws. Pretty much any unconsumed fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy et al will have to be disposed of at arrival.

There are some airlines (read: LCC) who will not allow you to eat food other than their own on board.

However for the purpose of the OP, shouldn't be an issue.

Specifically with Qantas, I called recently enquiring about a menu on an international flight as I had a travel companion with an allergy. The CSO suggested I can take my own food on board if I wasn't sure if the food was OK. So you won't have any problems.

No problems at all, just remember to either dispose of any uneaten food on arrival and / or declare it. Also double check your bag for any items which may have fallen out of the main packets, you'd hate for CBP / AQIS to be the ones to find the packet of nuts which you'd forgotten about.

As others have said, just keep in mind any foods which could have an offensive smell. Use the "average person test", in other words don't assume because you don't mind the smell of something that everyone sitting near to you will like the smell as well.

And of course, don't forget that if you are taking any liquid food (protein shakes etc) that they must be below 100ml and fall into your LAGS allowance.

That wouldn't include if it was just powder though?

Thanks to all....I wont be taking on any Limburger cheeses. just some cheeses and a decent quantity of nuts and perhaps some ham.

For all my good intentions the temptations on board might get the better of me anyway.

Might be wise to ensure the powder is in the original container. Not a good idea to be going through airports with unmarked portions of white powder substances.

Note on many US domestic flights I have taken I have seen people taking on board various different "fast food" packages - including in DOM F (which is though not as good as DOM J on QF/DJ)

As others have said, you can bring anything you want with you (just avoid anything that has an odour).

Once you get to the other end, just dispose of it or you have to declare to customs on arrival.

I noticed that too. Full bags of Maccas etc, jumbo slurpees and coffee.
Have seen it once or twice here.

Do they search you as you get on board? It would not be easy to police.
