A restaurant i've been going to years now is Cafe Sydney - Great views, good service and a great wine list/coughtail menu... the best thing about this restaurant is the atmosphere (especially on a clear day or night).

Rating: 9/10
Restaurant Name: Cafe Sydney
Style: Moden Australian
Location: Circular Quay (Smack Bang next to the train station)
Price range: How longs a piece of string? For us it's usually $250 - $400 depending on the wine
Recommended dish: I've had some great fish and lamb dishes at Cafe Sydney - great scallops as well.

Cafe Sydney - captures the essence of Sydney

We visit Sydney at least 4 times a year now, as our son lives here.

When we stay at the Four Points Darling Harbour we always eat at Medusa Greek Restaurant. " Authentic and Creative Greek Cuisine " they state on their business card - let me just say it is soooooo much better than any greek restaurant in Greece !
The slow cooked lamb is excellent !

2 Market Street Sydney, (corner of Kent and Market )

Price !! I dont know - I never pay the bill :D

I'm going to be in Sydney on my birthday (a weekday), staying near Circular Quay, on holiday from the UK. Where should we go to eat? Budget not particularly an issue as long as the food makes the cost worth it. I'm not a wine expert, though do like a glass or two. It's early March, so rules out anywhere where you have to book years in advance. Suggestions appreciated!

Around Circular Quay we go to ARIA,CAFE SYDNEY and finally the smorgasbord at The Intercontinental. All three have worked for us.

ARIA is good if you can get a able, use concierge services to guarantee a table! Worth every cent for food, a bit hoo hum as far as vino costs I'm my experience

Up from the quay is the worlds best dumplings, Din Tai Fung at world square, value for money

While the wine costs may be high, the list is very extensive and impressive. The food is wonderful, but does not come cheap.

I've been reading reviews of Aria elsewhere - consensus seems to be that when they are on form, it is fantastic, but that they are regularly not on good form and not worth the money when that is the case. Any comments?

I'm leaning towards Cafe Sydney because the reviews seem to be more consistently good.

Dr.ron and I are off to Bilsons on Friday night for their degustation menu. Looks pretty good. Report to follow.

Which one. They have 4 to choose from. I would suggest the 15 course 4 hour menu. Food at it's best however Tony is currently in France at a wine expo.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

yes they get carried with the 'business' and lose the passion that brought them there in the first place. A life cycle it appears.

Or more a decision to chase fame.

He maybe in France, but how often does he cook?

Its quite a scam if you believe you are going to a 'name' resturant and you think your 'man' will be slaving away with the copper pots!!! Very few of them don the chefs apron these days.

Completely agree however I was just commenting as I knew Tony was in France.

His head chef is truly spectacular and I am sure the "Rons" will love Bilsons.

Over the past year, I've a couple of hit and miss meals at Cafe Sydney: I find that when busy, the dishes go from Great to Average fairly quickly. Dining when slightly quieter however (such as 9pm+) and you generally get a good serve.

Other places I've been getting into recently are Sake (The Rocks) and Fish Face (Darlinghurst)

A lot depends on the food vs. view vs. snob value IMvHO.

Around the rocks are really great but you look away from the city. Spanish tapa's or food find Subsolo. Maybe take the ferry across to Milsons Pt to Aqua, Sails or even Ripples (right on the water) on a warmer night. Balmain if you want to go a little further for more casual or some of the best pub food you can find, try 3 weeds its a 1 hat resturant. You also get to look at the great city in lights.

But i have to agree for a special occasion or work paying Cafe Sydney is probably my pick.

We ended up going to Cafe Sydney, where we had a great time. Thanks for the recommendation.
