I've got a once in a lifetime occasion to celebrate later this year and would like some recommendations. It will need to be some place never visited before, so Rockpool is out. How's the Bennelong place doing these nights?

PS, I notice their website says 1.5% for cc charges. Which is that booking site that reaps extra AMEX points again?

Thanks cambrianmarsh, Cafe SYD looks very nice with that view. I wonder if a view across the harbour would be better in the day time or the night time... Also getting good reviews on TA is Guillaume in Paddo.

Please remind me about the booking site for restaurants that gives points for bkg on line. Is it Dimmis, I just can't remember off hand.

We like the night view from Cafe Sydney. Sorry don't know which site gives points for bookings but will watch with interest.

Thanks, Cafe Sydney is looking pretty good. Dimmi is useful for 100 points. Booking through VA website provides 300 points, but Cafe Sydney is not listed. I still have this idea there was another more generous bkg site.

My Sydney restaurant for big occasions is Prime, beneath the old GPO. Definitely no views :) but a great occasion.

Oh boy, those Prime steaks look good. I remember when that was a place that you could peer into the kitchin from outside the restaurant, can you still do that?

We are celebrating my daughter having only 2 weeks till the end of her 6th degree and her medical speciality exams / work, all of which she managed the rare feat of passing everything first time and having a (bit) of a social life.

Prime is good, but I have boycotted it ever since I went there for lunch and it took 90min from order to plate for a group of 10 (medium was the most cooked) - and on a Wed

For steak theatre - Rockpool Bar and Grill - beautiful building and open kitchen.

In summer - anything down at Woolloomoo Wharf is good, as is The Butler up the hill (for some different city views)

Yes, quite so. The Sydney Cafe is not listed on either QF or VA bkg sites. I have booked, but they want us out by 8.15pm! Might look around for somewhere else in the meantime.

Through Qantas, the underlying booking engine is indeed Dimmi's but you need to go via the Qantas site (as at least one friend has found out after the event!).

For a once in a lifetime occasion in Sydney (and I am assuming money is low on the priority list here) I would be recommending the Jonah's For Dinner package

Otherwise, you can book an identical package to the above - but without the sea plane flight - and be chauffeured there and back in a pure indulgent Rolls Royce Phantom.

Thanks Alanslegal, that certainly looks like a special day / evening out. At around $600 per head, I'd need to weight that up against an o/s holiday!

I can also recommend Cafe Sydney one of my very favourites in Sydney, views to die for, and real food, none of that namby pamby small plates.

Re Cafe SYD, is it one of the AMEX 3 points per $ can anyone remember?

Do they have an AMEX cc surcharge? If so, I can see that have gift vouchers that can be bought by PayPal (on my AMEX) to avoid that surcharge. I wonder if AMEX would give 3 pts per $ on a restaurant gift voucher...

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Any suggestions / discounts on reasonably priced parking after 6pm in the city, toward the northern end? Sometimes there are say AMEX offers or something.

A lot of the city car parks have "flat rate" deals after 5pm. They usually have A frames outside advertising the rates.
