I currently have 95K miles and I'm trying to plan a trip to Skopje (SKP) in September.

I'm not sure what would be best use of miles and be the most cost effective.

Do I:

  • Fly with Scoot to SIN and then fly out of SIN
    • SIN-IST-SKP RTN with TK in either Y or J
or
  • Fly with Air Asia to BKK and then fly out of BKK
    • Fly with OU BKK - VIE - SKP
or
  • Fly with miles from SYD to SKP using a S* partner

SIN-IST is 5392 actual miles + IST-SKP 378 miles
vs
BKK-VIE is 5257 miles + VIE-SKP 492 miles

It's my first time doing a major flight booking with KF as last time was just a simply SYD-SIN-BKK flight.

For 97.75K miles you could fly SYD-IST return - one way in Y the other in J, on SQ (booked online). Then purchase a separate paid fare IST-SKP return.

Otherwise to do using star alliance partners using KF miles it will cost 100K return - all in economy -from Sydney (you can buy the extra 5K miles for $200 USD, which would be better than paying for Scoot)

Awesome dajop.

I so wish I could get both in J on SQ :) last time I flew in J was with OU before they pulled out of SYD.

SQ taxes come to $838 - would Star Alliances partners have lower taxes?

IST-SKP with TK is $232.

Some may have lower taxes ( I think TG does ex-Australia), but will take a lot more points and you will lose the 15% online booking discount and therefore will be probably travelling Y in both directions!

Also, you can get from IST to SAW by public transport, if you have plenty of time to spare, but it's not exactly quick... train/bus or train/ferry/bus. Not sure if you can go via bus for the whole journey. I'd happily pay the extra to fly TK out of IST, vsr the expedition to SAW and worrying about luggage restrictions etc...

I guess I will just stick to SQ and suck it up! A RTN flight with Thai/Austrian atm is around the $1950 mark so it's a massive discount and at least I get J on SYD-IST!

I found a few bus companies doing IST > Taskim (Centre of Istanbul) > SAW for approx Euro 60 so it will end up costing Euro 120 for a RTN bus ride. I'll just stick to the extra $100 for the TK flight and fly out of IST.

Just did a bit more calculations and I need another 25K to have SYD-SIN-SYD in Y and the longer SIN-IST-SIN in J :-(

You may be able to get SYD-SIN return for ~$600 in Y on Qantas (booked through expedia.com.br) and in the process save ~$300 in taxes.

Real taxes will be the same. Carrier impossed fees (fuel surcharges, etc [profit-margin]) are NOT taxes
By using the word "taxes" instead on the correct "taxes & carrier impossed fees" you are playing airlines (deception) game

Or get my family to use my Westpac SQ Amex heaps by the time I need to book and score some more miles haha. The thing that is annoying is that I lost about 25K on a flight me and a mate missed (2 x BKK-SIN) last year and SQ won't refund the miles which I totally understand.

dajop,

Are you able to book a mixed Y/J RTN fare on sq.com? As on a Saver you one-way you can't have a stop over in SIN which would be nice to have for a day on the way back.
