I am off to Hong Kong and Bangkok for a short visit... and I find myself in my favourite place in the world, the Qantas Lounge. I walk up the wonderful escalators have a brief chat to the lounge host before finding a seat with a view over the tarmac. Qantas has just released the Autumn Menu in their First Lounge and I am super keen to try it out.

I have the following dishes & wines:
  • Kingfish sashimi with daikon, sesame, togarashi and organic soy (paired with the Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage)
  • Grilled chicken breast with silverbeet, oregano salmoriglio & soft polenta (paired with the Carlei Green Vineyards Pinot Gris)
  • Grilled plums with vanilla gelato & soft gingerbread (paired with the St Hallett ‘Butcher’s Cart’ Shiraz)
  • Shaved fennel salad with William pear, pecans & Parmigiano reggiano
  • Fettuccine with Ragu Bolognese inspired by Rosetta Ristorante (paired with the Reschke ‘Vitulus’ Cabernet Sauvignon)

Here are a few pictures and my review of my favourite dish below. You can check out the full review on my blog here (Qantas First Class Lounge (Autumn Menu 2015) | Life of a Travel Czar).

Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage (2006) - there is of course the obligatory snap of the champagne against the backdrop of the tarmac.

The Grand Vintage has lovely honey and floral aromas while on the palate the taste of nectarines, currants with creamy crusty richness along with some subtle hints of toasted almond in the finish makes for a excellent start to the evening.

The chicken is delightful, the rich herby aroma of the thyme and oregano immediately catches your attention. The smoky charred surface of the chicken which has experienced the wrath of the grill’s heat works in tandem with the tender moist succulent middle portion of the chicken for an amazing taste sensation. The olive oil dressing also adds a Mediterranean lightness to the dish. The soft grainy textured polenta adds a mild balance to the dish while the crunchy silverbeet introduces a different layer of texture while some raisins in the salad add a tangy sweetness to round out the experience.

Stay tuned for next post from Hong Kong!!

Hong Kong - Harbour Grand Hong Kong

When I stay in Hong Kong, I have always enjoyed the Harbour Grand Hong Kong Hotel. It is in Fortress Hill (Northpoint) and is considered a little out of the way (but the reality is nothing is too far out of town in Hong Kong). The hotel has stunning views and an amazing Club Lounge with wonderful canapes and drinks in the afternoon.

Here some pictures of my room and the view from the Club Lounge. You can see the full review here - Harbour Grand Hong Kong (March 2015) | Life of a Travel Czar

Man Wah at Mandarin Oriental (Hong Kong)

I am off to have Yum Cha in Hong Kong and I figure its best to go to a venue with great views, fantastic food and great service. I choose Man Wah which is located in the Mandarin Oriental in Central Hong Kong for this occasion.

It turned out to be one of the best Yum Cha experiences I have had. Here are some snaps of the lunch. You can check-out the full review here Man Wah – Yum Cha (Mandarin Oriental) | Life of a Travel Czar

I get to the hotel and on the Man Wah floor this is the view I enjoy over Hong Kong. Its beautiful!

One dish I had was the Assorted Dim Sum Platter

Here's whats on the platter:

Tiger prawn and bamboo shoot dumpling. The sticky glutinous dumpling which is a traditional favourite.

Roast goose puff with yanmin sauce. This is a little gem, its shaped like a goose for an added aesthetic touch – probably too beautiful as I just don’t want to eat it.

Golden taro puff with abalone. This is really about textures and flavour balance.

W Bangkok (Thailand)
