Had a look at both flexi price and points only for end of May (4 of us flying) and glad I was sitting down.

Points only return in J (saver class) was just under 1.1M points yes 1.1m points.

Flexi fares were $429.00 per person each way, adding up to total $3,432.00 plus 80,000 points to upgrade to J. Fexi fares are around $170.00 more per person each way than saver for what really.

I think VA are either kidding themselves or a stuck in a tricky position due to their own success in J on this route.

I still remember the 52,000 points plus $1,200.00 return for 4 in J on the A330 when it first started plus the bonus limo promo at the same time.

I have noticed that all my recent Per flights have been just about full in both J & Y, I wonder if and when VA will put more capacity on this route. Maybe they need some more A330's.

A full(ish) cabin will almost always lead to higher prices. Better 1 95% full plane with the last 25% paying a premium price, than 2 60% full on planes where most people are paying bottom dollar... at least from VA perspective...

As a shareholder I agree.

As a consumer I don't.

Those splinters in the bum are starting to hurt !!!!!!

Gee mogul I fly that for about 50,000 points (net) with QF and get status credits.

Sounds to me like that VA would be very happy with the position they find themselves in!

Must be on the days you are after, I'm showing points only return J reward flights on two particular days at the end of May for 297600 for four people...Were you using an anyseat request?

Edit: You were using an anyseat J flight, I just searched and it came up with 1.1mil as well :p

Yes, you were definately looking at an any seat booking which is expensive.

I just did some searches for Reward J seats and can see them at 37,200 + $28 per one way flight, and I could see flights with availability for 4 seats. So all up using reward seats you would be looking at about 298,000 pts and $224 which is not bad.

I was going to start a similar thread!

Virgin seem to be pushing prices up extremely high at a quick rate.

I flew MEL-PER boxing day and returned new year's day - each way was $329 (Flexi, with points upgrade to J). Not long before that, Flexi was $299. A month after, it was $349, a couple of weeks later, $379, now $399! A 30% increase in a few months! And J was only half full both ways.

At the same time, the price of J has reduced from $1300-$1400 each way, to $999 and as low as $699.

The value of points upgrades seems to be rapidly decreasing.

Virgin was entering the J class market back then. They needed people in the seats. It was not at all sustainable. And honestly, if you think they're kidding themselves flying 4 people on angle-flat beds 2,400 miles for $1,700 .... you're right! They're not making one cent. It should be much higher. For what you pay as a flexi fare from PER-MEL, I often pay from CBR-MEL!

I have noticed this same increase in Flexi prices on this route. It cuts deeply into the value of the complimentary upgrades that come with platinum.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Not just coast to coast, many routes have had a steady increase for flexi. About $10-20 a quarter. Savers remain competitive.
