Looking at booking a flight from SYD-HKG for early next year and have the option of either VS or SQ (in Y class....although Y+ on VS isn't all that more expensive...). In terms of SCs, will flying SQ involve the usual segmentation of the flight as occurs with any other service (i.e. SYD-SIN, SIN-HKG, HKG-SIN and SIN-SYD) or will it be overridden with a simple SYD-HKG calculation as it is the more direct option available (as occurs on DJ domestic flights if travelling, say, SYD-LST via MEL, the SYD-LST calculation will be made with MEL not factored into the equation and it done in a non-segmented fashion...)? Does anyone have experience in this area...?

International flights get SCs as flown.
Note carefully the booking class (particularly on SQ) as the really cheap fares can earn nothing.

It's $1400 on SQ in the lowest SC earning class which would get me 200SCs return...? And it's $1330 for the direct on VS which would get me a mere 60 return (although it's ~$2000 return on Y+ which would get me a comfier seat, more baggage and 180SCs...still less than SQ -what's VS Y+ like??)

Whats it with VA, which will have a higher point return thanks to the status bonus?

In terms of SQ it's much of a muchness. An interesting quirk of the system is that if I book one way on economy on the VS flight, I have to book premium economy for the other direction...

Just check with SQ as I would have thought 100 SCs are for discount economy. You'd get 200 for full flexi.
I've done a oneway HKg to SYD for about $500+ on SQ and 100 SCs (40-HK-sin, then 60 sin-SYD)
