Just flew in on VA 1535 from HBA and we landed from the west on the East-West runway - sorry don't know the correct runway number. I am struggling to remember the last time this happened on a flight I was on but it was many many years ago. Would be interested to hear how often this happens and if it's related to weather, not much traffic on Saturday night, maintenance on other runways or whether it's a fairly regular occurrence & I have just not experienced it for a while. Sure made for a quick taxi to the gate. In 30 min I fly to OOL so will be hanging out to see if we also take off this way. Actually just watched a plane take off on the North-South to the south so maybe not.

Usually a daily event to have arrivals on 25 with departures off the main runways. Part of the airports noise sharing arrangement.

Yep, 25 is common in the middle of the day (landing towards the west) for noise abatement reasons. 07 (landing east) is rare and is normally due to a very strong easterly. I have only done it once in the last two years.

Now that you mention it, I landed to the east last night at roughly 10pm where I've only ever landed on the north south runway at that time before. Actually it's the first time landing on east-west in a very long time for me.

As others have said, regular for noise abatement as is the steep take offs to the north, then turning left or right once altitude reached. Seems to happen mostly during daylight hours.

Does not surprise me! I'm under the flight path for 16R and 16L and it has been quiet for a while tonight!

I live under the approach path for runway 25 (the east-west runway). Can confirm that planes land on this runway quite frequently. Seems to be most commonly during the day or late in the evening (i.e. not when the airport is busy) and the main runways are usually used at the same time for takeoffs.

Funny - I had the same landing ex HBA on QF on the 3rd and also the first time in ages that I had a E-W landing.

It was the approach that first struck me as 'odd' - never had this view of SYD before :

I believe the largest aircraft that can use the east-west runway is a B737.

Thanks everyone - I've learned a lot from this experience.
Turns out that for the flight to OOL we just taxied out to the 3rd runway as and took off to the south as seems usual. One thing about Saturday evenings is that is sure is quiet. Plus I noticed as I walked to the gate that half the shops had airport staff in them - guess they have a bit of free time to do some browsing.

We have landed to the East on a 747 from NRT a year or two ago.

I have done 2 TOGA"s (same flight) on E-W runway one night on B767 and the skipper finally gave up and landed on 34L

Sure it wasn't a 742? I flew QF44 a few times then on one of those, with regular op ups.

Come to think of it maybe it was a 742 not 744. I know the 74M (747 Combi) often did that route as well as the 742.

On one occasion as a humble QP member I got an op-up to J (row 26?) main deck when I had a coveted seat 12A in whY upper deck.

live under the flight path and usually see landings coming in from the east on late evenings or on weekends. all types usually - the 380s are the most impressive as they are quiet and appear out of nowhere seeming to glide into land whilst dominating the skyline.
