So after doing some research and discovering that VA still fly a 737 to DPS despite the 6-7 hour flight time, I decided to bite the bullet and still book VA for the SC earn. After the worst flight of my life imagine the horror when I log in to see only 20 SC credited! I would've thought given the length of the flight the earn would be at least 30? Could anyone clarify?

DPS is just over 2800 miles on a discount economy fare = 20 SC ... Over 3000 miles would have got you 30 SC on a discount economy

What was the load like? I can't believe people want to do 7 hours on a 737. I did 5.5 hours back from NAN once and that was killer.

Haha oops, didn't check the chart! Just assumed that with SYD-OOL at 10SC's a flight 6x the length would credit more.

The load I'd say was at 90%. Those poor people in rows 27-30 had to deal with a constant line of people for the loo. The chosen ones in J looked to be 4/8 but having flown in that seat a number of times can't say I envied them too much! They looked just as uncomfortable.

Hrm ok will keep an eye out for a sale on business class fares. At the moment they are not releasing the lower end fare classes.

I have an upcoming flight MEL-DPS in row 3 what are your thoughts on this?

I've done SYD-DPS in J and DPS-SYD in Y Row 3 (given the former was a daytime flight and the latter overnight, I definitely got the order of that wrong). Regardless, both were fine. J is your typical Dom J seat, and for a daytime flight you don't need a lay-flat on this. Thankfully my wife and I had Row 3 A-C to ourselves. In fact Row 3 D-F was also vacant, along with all of Row 4 (until the more rearward pax decided to move in there, at least. None of them had the gumption to come right up to Row 3 D-F. I slept for 4 hours in 3C, no problems.

Regardless, both were fine.

My experience too - not fantastic, but fine. Daytime flight in Y, night flight in J. But considering what you can get trans-Tasman on NZ for 3 hours, it does leave a little to be desired..

Problem with row 3 is you cant lift the arms up, I and my wife went row 3 BNE to DPS and row 4 back both flights with middle seats spare, I preferred row 4 over row 3 any day.

Personally, if its not too time constraining, personally, I would fly AU with SQ via SIN on a 777 and then down to DPS.
Seeing AU east coast to NZ in whY is 15 VA SC, I wouldn't be surprised that AU to DPS is only 20 VA SC.

^ SQ via SIN was my first choice but it was a last-ish minute booking and the only fares available were expensive flexi's.

Flew the red eye DPS-SYD yesterday, what a nightmare. Seat wouldn't lock when reclined and the load was 100% as Jetstar cancelled their flights due to volcanic activity. Had an extremely loud man in the row next to me that wouldn't stop complaining about the experience with Jetstar and had complete disregard for the people around him trying to sleep.

Apparently the flight path is only 2,800 miles but I'm pretty sure the actual flight path they take is >3,000..

We'll be going SYD-PER-DPS then DPS-SYD in August. A moment of madness when we were thinking of status credits (and before I joined up here). Will see how it goes...fortunately it'll be in J...unfortunately it will be 737-800 every sector!

I did J ADL DPS last December, sure not a full J product but for the 10K points it cost to upgrade, it was definitely better than sitting in Y!
