I have received an amazing invitation to head to Cape Town to spend Xmas and NYE for 2013/14 and am wondering if anyone had any advice on the most affordable way to get there and back? I know it's the worst time of year to go, but the offer is far too good to say no to, so am trying to sort out the best fare available. I am VA PLAT so would prefer one of the VA alliance partners (DL, EY, SQ) but for the right price I'll fly anyone.

My research so far has shown QF and SAA to have the most convenient routing, but holy moly is it pricey!

So my questions:

1. Anyone know of any alternative routings that are a bit cheaper?
2. So far SQ is quoting me $2700 return - is that standard or pricey?
3. l would consider a LCC to Singapore or HK or something and then on from there of anyone has done that? I also don't mind spending a night somewhere along the way.
4. Would it be cheaper to fly to JNB and get a second ticket JNB - CPT?

Any insights would be great!

Thanks.

SQ at $2700 is a standard price for that time of year. What is your budget and rough dates of travel?

One way tickets from CPT/JNB to SYD in early Jan is only around $1000 so if it was me I’d use points to get there and buy a ticket back. Unfortunately QF has no award tickets in Dec surprise surprise but EY seems to have availability and SQ is on waitlist.

Emirates or one of the other gulf carriers ?
You will get more options into Jo'burg with a domestic JNB-CPT flight
Look the JNB airport web site to find out who fly's into it (Cathay does)

Have you considered MK via MRU - connections can sometimes be hellish but maybe worth a look?

My budget is whatever it takes to get there, and if it comes to it I would pay the $2700 but would rather not! I'd jump at anything around the $2K or slightly over mark. I would ideally like to fly on 19/20/21 December and back anytime between 7 and 11 Jan. The worst dates for travel, I know.

Pardon my ignorance, but one way tickets on which airline?
