Hi All,

For the above flights, is the ATR 72-500 (Skywest) better or Embraer 190 (VA)?

I will need to get to CBR by 9am approx.

Will be redeeming my free return AMEX Plat EDGE flight.

Thanks,
K.

No comparison. Embraer is a very comfortable jet, quieter, faster, more spacious.

Thanks will go for the VA flight then. I don't feel comfortable with flying on small planes, but I have no choice for this route it looks like. The smallest plane I've been in is the A320 and B737...

Embraers are my favourite type of single-aisle aircraft. The seats are wider and more comfortable than on a 737 or 320 because it's a bit wide for standard 2 x 2 but not wide enough for 3 x 3. They feel more exclusive and futuristic than a 737 but less cramped than an ATR.

The E190 is not a small jet either, its actually bigger than the 737-700 (length wise anyway)

Thanks. When boarding the E190 is it going to be via stairs or a bridge? :)

Usually airbridge, though Canberra VA only has a couple of bridges so can be hit and miss there.

Hi All,

Wondering if any canberra locals can help me out here:) I am malaysian and I need to go to canberra to renew my passport :( I am based in SYD. I am planning to use my AMEX Plat EDGE free VA flight to CBR. I will probably take the first flight out of SYD. I need to be at the malaysia high comm before 10am. Say 9am?

Trying to find out what is the most economical and best way to get from Canberra airport to the high comm in Canberra. Address is: 7 Perth Avenue Yarralumla ACT 2600.

And also to get back to the airport. Will probaby go for the 5 or 6PM flight back to SYD?

I was thinking rental car from hertz or the like? But not sure if this is economical, or taxi both ways etc.

Any suggestions? and the approx cost of taxis etc? and how long will it take between the high comm and airport using a car/bus?

Apparently the passport will be ready after 3PM.

Also when do I need to be at the airport by to check in? 30mins or 1 hour before flight? I will be flying back to SYD same day early evening.

Thanks,
K.

According to Google it's only about 9km. So a taxi costs around $20-30 one way, probably. I haven't recently driven in that part of Canberra during peak time, but it doesn't get too slow, you could probably make the journey in 20 mins.

Buses won't be much fun as you'd have to change over at Civic and the airport bus costs something like $10.

If you want to hire a car, you've got the entire day and there's plenty to see in that part of Canberra. You can look at all the embassies, visit Parliament House (New and Old), High Court, Questacon, National Library, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, and a few other things I've probably missed.

Airport check-in time is the Virgin Australia usual: 30 minutes before the flight is minimum, more is better.

If you have to wait till after 3, best to get a car. Otherwise you'll be stuck in an otherwise remote part of Canberra. (To be honest, I don't know what public transports like in that part of Canberra as I live elsewhere in CBR. but if it's anything like mine then it's useless)

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking about a car, but its like $80 or so........Unless I am looking at the wrong places???

What date?

You might find you'll spend that much on taxis, depending on what you want to see.

Thanks guys. I just had a look at budget car rental and it's like $50 for the day. Not sure why hertz and europcar charge like $80 for the same type of car??? Or am I missing something? :)

Also is it quick to get the car once I arrive at CBR and easy to return it??? Reason I ask is I don't have much time... Sorry for the questions, am new at this

Prices change on a daily basis for rentals - I've rented for as little as $30 a day in CBR. Picking up is very easy as is drop off. There is also a petrol station at the airport. Consider bringing a satnav too, it took me a while to suss out the roads when I lived there.

Silly question, but why don't you just drive down from Sydney? It is only a little over 3 hours. I had to do the same trip to the British High Commission a few years back, for the same reason. Easy day trip.

Also, if you have to be there early in the morning, remember there is always a high risk of fog in Canberra. You might not make it if you fly.
