Suggestions for SFO to HKG Flight

Hi everyone

I'm planning to fly to HKG in late April, and I was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions on their recent experiences to date with the various airlines that service this route. I'm looking to fly either economy or a premium economy product.

Anything direct and operating during the time you want should be fine. I think UA does that route.

CX offer 2 daily services SFO-HKG. From recollection CX873 leaves at OMG o'clock getting into HKG early morning & CX879 leave around lunchtime getting in mid-evening.

I've taken CX879 a couple of times, but at the pointy end of the bus, so can't give info about Y/Y+ product. They are now using updated 744 aircraft almost exclusively on that route. Also, CX use the BA lounges (inc F lounge) which whilst basic, often allows for direct boarding from the lounges.

Doesn't SQ flies between HKG-SFO as well? That could be a good alternative.

I flew CX two years ago from SFO to HKG in economy and it felt like being packed in a can of sardines. I just checked out the new website and I see that there is a new economy offering, as Hawkeye mentioned. Has anyone been on the new CX economy offering?

Generally speaking, I've found SQ's economy offering to be slightly more comfortable than CX in the past. Surprisingly, SQ now flies direct from SFO to HKG!!! Can anyone speak for SQ's economy offering from SFO to HKG?

The cost of SQ is basically the same for CX (i.e. around $750 round trip). I'd be inclined to take SQ unless the feedback on CX's new economy class product outweighs my prior experiences with SQ.

Oh, i've also redeemed first class seats from HKG to LHR return with CX. Does anyone know what the chances are of getting the new first class product on this route in late April this year?

I've not kept right up to date with the refurbishment time table, but nearly all the CX 744's are now flying with the new interiors (74A). I don't think the 777's are currently undergoing refurbishment, so the chances depend upon which aircraft you get.

The CX F suites are very nice. I've not yet flown QF A380 F, so can't make a direct comparison
