Still choose QF

Just returned from 4 days in Toronto. Been watching for a while, with interest, the comments for and against Qantas, staff morale drop off, other airlines better etc etc. I am a 2 million kilometer flyer, 60% of which has been on the Red Roo. Apart from BA and AA, my last non-QF international flight was with Etihad, which was pretty damn nice too. However, my 2c worth is that QF still have a great product and, all things considered, will continue to get my custom.

I agree.

Having flown EK Business, I know where I will be directing my (albeit limited) spending - or at least where I won't be. QF is very much the number 1 choice for me.

There product is pretty good, although not always the best, depending on the crew. However I think people are getting increasingly concerned whether QF are going to be able to fly them efficiently where they want to go, and whether they can get useful returns from the FF program, which has continued to deteriorate over the years (F lounges being the standout exception as well as recent changes to upgrade process).

Going east or south from Australia (classing JNB & SCL as south due to polar routes) they are perhaps the no. 1 choice, going north or west there are plenty of good alternatives which is why they are struggling and why people are going to alternatives.

I like them, I don't need to try another and come back here and talk about how good it is on the other side of the fence. On the whole they look after me

I like them & can't see myself or my family leaving.....never say never!

I'm fast approaching LTG (800 SC to go) and TBH, have pondered (once LTG secured) whether I'll pop over to the dark side and give it a whirl!

I agree with the comments above. It does depend on the crew but if I can and the price is competitive I will fly Qantas as I want to support an airline that i am a member of their ffp and their affiliation with the one world alliance is in opinion a huge benefit.

i agree. Love the A380s,, the A330 service from SYD-PER, the First class lounge at Sydney and the QFF program

Well ask yourself this? if Rich deCrespignay or JB was the captain of AF447, would those people still be alive ?

The answer is most probably yes or at worst they would have had a better chance.

The same goes for all qantas pilots. That's why you fly Qantas, to get there safely.

As for Emirates, well they nearly took out a few Melbourne suburbs based on a stupid stupid stupid mistake.

I think I'll stick with the tried and tested thank you. Anyone can pour champagne with sufficient practice.

Of course though you need to be very careful when you are booking flights (most AFF'ers would be), but for the unsuspecting, a QF flight to CDG could see you ending up on a QF code on a flight operated by AF.......

To me it is not as simple as choosing QF or not. Each flight is different and I will choose the airline fly with based on several criteria. Things like company policy, cost, departure time, travel time, number of connections, level of service, type of aircraft, seating, luggage allowance, FF points, FF status benefits and lounge access. I don't have a lot of loyalty to any airline and will happily switch to which ever one suits me best at the time. But having said that I do give Qantas a slight favoritism.

For domestic and trans-tasman most of the time for me Qantas is coming out top in that equation. But Virgin is closing the gap.

For other international destinations Qantas usually doesn't rate well. Primarily because i'll need one or two more connections to go with Qantas than alternative airlines. Or even that Qantas don't have any overnight flights from the east coast to SIN or HKG, or conversely no day time flights coming back the other way.

I think Qantas often gets an unfair beating. I agree that consistency is a problem, but overall their product is excellent. Walk into a lounge elsewhere in the world and they are rarely anything on what QF offers. I would barely rate the CX First lounge in HK, for example.

The challenge is the network.

I do agree with most of the comments above. For work, my current company has a Qantas only policy and having been on many other airlines over the yeas, QF always have been one of my favorites. Especially their long-haul product on the A380 is up there with other 5 Star airlines, on my last two flights (one in J and one in F) the service matched what you would expect from SQ who are still setting the benchmark for airline service in my eyes.

Sometimes, and in my experience these occasions got rarer and rarer lately, you still bump into an old unfriendly dragon on board but really, this can happen on any airline. Overall, I've been quite happy with them on most occasions.

This year 120 Qantas pilots have been seconded to Emirates for a 3 year period. In fact Emirates now have more former Qantas pilots than Qantas have current pilots. Luckily Qantas have the JetStar newbies to prop up the roster.

On yesterdays QF582 (PER-SYD), I noticed 2 things in Y which l hadn't seen before.

1) After they served dinner, the FA's then walked up and down with a basket full those mini Red/White wines and offering top-ups, before the coffee run.
2) WP's (assuming here) getting a 'if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask' from FA's (including drink orders). The FA doing this had the yellow pax list and doing it in a more open way than l had seen previously.

Looks like QF is making an effort to fend off people from switching over to VA and focusing on customer service.

Well done QF and a win for customers.

Shall chime in and say I'm loyal to QF too, but a lot of my flying is to FIFO ports that only QFLink service, so there's not really much choice. I still like them though, they're easily my fav airline :)

I think someone commented the other day QF probably thinks I'm a miner, based on where I fly. Though I've never rocked the fluoro.

We run a cooking school in Tuscany twice a year and I only book Qantas discount Y as I manage to keep my Gold up. I love having access to the lounges for the flight breaks plus I can generally score a seat with extra legroom. We have benefited from operational upgrades and invitational upgrades. I find the crew to be great - if they are hired in Australia or NZ. The last flight we codeshared HKG-FCO with CX. The difference was remarkable. While the CX crew weren't bad, they weren't great. The seatbelt sign was on for a large portion of the flight yet we felt no turbulence. They didn't offer those extras like icecreams etc.

On the downside, almost all of our guests from Australia (including a QFi first officer) fly to Italy with the Middle Eastern airlines. Their flights are cheaper and generally far more efficient in terms of timing. Other than the rare times I can book the CX codeshare via HKG (but have a 12 hour layover on the return flight), we fly via LHR which adds an additional BA leg and at least another 6 hours to our trip. If we do codeshare, I lose all my potential status benefits (other than free exit row seating on CX).

Also the UK engaged Qantas crew appear disengaged. An example was when I watched one young flight attendant stand by the exit row chatting to two attractive men while right behind them a very tiny Indian woman who was very inexperienced with flying alone trying to get her bag into the overhead locker. She did not know how to do up her seatbelt and in fact the plane took off with it undone. We had to call to the people sitting near the Indian lady to help her.

yes have to agree, I support local business even if they sometimes get it wrong, keeps jobs in australia

Nothing better than having been overseas for a while and stepping on a Qantas flight and hearing the Australian accent, seeing Australian faces, eating Australian foods and reading Australian papers. I personally despise the Middle Eastern carriers they are like luxury buses IMHO.
