Some third party sites don't give the option to enter in VA velocity member numbers when booking partner airlines, eg Virgin Atlantic.
Would it be a case of contacting Virgin Atlantic directly after making the booking to ensure the VA number is recorded?

Thanks in advance.

That's exactly what you need to do -- in most cases, the confirmation e-mail should contain the Virgin Atlantic booking reference -- grab that, go to the VS website and add your Velocity number there (I have no idea if that can be done on the VS website, but I assume it can).

yes, it can. I just did that and seat selection for some VS flights.
