Recently booked and completed a couple of flights between HKG and PVG with KA in Flex Y and based on the status calculator I should get 30SC. Yet when the flights have posted, I have only earned 15SC and it says economy/ flex economy.

Is this normal as very frustrating when using the calculator to determine status credits to attain status.

To add this was part of a Flex Y booking through QF so can only assume they have booked this leg in an economy bucket and not flex.

Sadly QF makes up their own rules as to which category a particular fare bucket falls into.

You can only earn Flex Y status credits if you are booked into Y class itself - most other fare classes will only earn at economy rates (15SCs). See: https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/flying/airline-earning#ka

The most jarring of these rules (at least for me) is J flights with MH - they only earn Flex Y status credits when flying between certain destinations. They initially did the same with QR as well (J earned at Flex Y, F earned at J) but later reversed course.

Have you checked the class codes of your booking?

To be Flexible Economy, the KA leg must be booked into class code Y. If it is booked in BHKLMV, it will credit as (standard) Economy, not Flexible Economy.

What kind of fare did you book? Just because it is called "Flex" doesn't necessarily mean it is full flexible Economy (i.e. the Y class code).

That all said, I don't blame you. Trying to book this, the class codes are not clear, nor is it clear at all from the fare rules which QFF fare family is being used for calculations (e.g. on the fare selection review page). It's confusing.

That is a nice summary of the different fare class codes one must reconcile between the booked fare and QFF fare class for the purposes of calculating status credits.

The OP mentioned the ticket was booked through QF. Unfortunately as far as I can tell, there isn't an easy way to determine the fare bucket at the time of booking with QF. There is another thread where Serfty has come up with a workaround: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....t-flyer-program/qf-booking-class-22124-8.html. For tickets already purchased, the fare class is displayed in Manage My Booking.

As the previous posters mentioned, one will then have to match this ticketed fare class with the Qantas status credits earn table. It is not exactly straightforward and can lead to confusion.

Also wanted to mention that KA/CX are one of the more transparent airlines when it comes to showing the actual fare class at the time of booking. The fare bucket is shown in brackets next to the travel class:

If only QF was as transparent ...

In fairness, CX/KA tell you your fare bucket when making the booking. Better than most airlines. I fly this route a lot and the price of a full Y fare is truly ridiculous. Even the jump from a bottom fare to BHKLMV can be double.
