Status Comp when not required??

I'm not sure whether this should be in the Status/Comp Gold Coast thread but as I live in MEL it is different scenario...

I am currently 10SCs short of SG renewal (with a 31 Oct Anniversary date) however, last week (11 Oct) I received my new SG card and the blurb explaining that I had be 'gifted' the status renewal due to my regular travel etc etc. Thing is, I have two flights booked for this week, 18 of Oct (MEL-SYD-SIN) that would have comfortably got me to SG renewal without needing the status comp before my anniversary date. These have been booked for at least 6 weeks so QFF would know about them.
Does this mean I may not get a status comp when I'm a few SCs short and will actually need/appreciate this? :-|
Has anyone else (apart from those on the Gold Coast) had their status comped recently when not actually required? Should I contact QF about this or just let it be?
cheers
Bert

PS no new bag tags or anything else in the letter, just the new SG card

Anecdotal evidence has suggested that if you're comped but then get the status by yourself, you'll save the comp for another time.

Renewal packs don't include the Q tags, if you drop a level and then come back to it you'll get them again.

It that a fact given there would not be too many in that bucket yet?

I would imagine it'd work like that, so there's no proof ;) but similarly nothing to say it doesn't work like that :p

I'm mainly just rehashing what others have said in the past, and not been jumped on.

Thanks Sam, hopefully I won't need a Status Comp anytime soon!
With regards to bag tags, I actually meant the standard bag tags, I still have the Q tags somewhere...

Not necessarily. There are no hard and fast rules. I was comped once about a month out from year end, but did (and was always going to) requalify with out needing the comp. The next year there was no comp for me, and I was downgraded status.

All part of the mystery of QFF.

For the past three years I received a letter advising of a status comp about 4 or 5 weeks out from renewal date, then went on to earn the required SC's myself.

I even called the QFF premium line one year to ask the OP'S question, and was told by the CSM that the system does recognise that the status renewal was earned and not comped - and that the comp "may" then be available in another year.

I definitely wouldn't rely on this happening. This year I got my first ever double SC offer about 2 months out from my re-qualifying date. I qualified in plenty of time but it wouldn't surprise me if the double SC offers were used instead of a comp - make sense for QF to do a "nice thing" that still involves you traveling and spending.

Interesting, a good reason to easily re-qualify every year with time to spare if possible then, to ensure the mysterious comp isn't used.

A few years ago I was comped 2 years in a row ~8 weeks before my anniversary and made it to Platinum each time. Hoping to be comped if I ever need it and getting close to Lifetime Gold so only drop one level anyway.

Where is Tony Hancock when you need him?
