Need some advice AFF community;

My Mum & Dad were flying EK J to Turkey & Back a few weeks ago and my mum has only just informed me she was stuck with a syringe in the females bathroom of the EK J lounge in SYD. Apparently she reported it to 3 staff who refused to fill out an incident report, and upon checking the register, the female bathrooms had not been checked for/cleared of syringes for weeks. She has written an email to the EK consumer affairs team but has not heard anything for over 2 weeks now, and has asked if I can do anything about it. Any advice on where I can take her complaint would be appreciated,

Thanks guys and Happy Holidays wherever you are spending them!

Report it directly to Sydney Airport:

Ultimately they need to know if a tenant isn't fulfilling their WH&S obligations.

Sadly your mother needs to discuss this with her doctor. Whilst the risk of disease is small it is real. Hepatitis is probably the most likely possibility but other diseases are probable.

The only thing about waiting this long is that the waiting time has probably passed by now so the results would be fairly quick.

That's truly awful Martin, something I hope never happens to me.

I can't help too much with who to contact but I hope the matter is resolved well.

Have a great Christmas and new year as well sir!

I would have thought that the media might be interested
And it's a dreadful story and best wishes for your family. Just shouldn't happen

All the best. I'd think her Doctor might recommend a couple of tests for blood borne diseases. There is a very remote chance that anything will be found but she must have them.

And a tetanus shot too.

And I would escalate this immediately.

Am very surprised staff wouldn't fill out an incident report. I would have been demanding it and/or requesting higher level airport authorities.

Would agree with the medical advice above.

Would also be looking at sending any mail via registered post so you can prove delivery.

But without full information it is difficult to give advice

yes we had had some blood work done, and her dr has given her some precortionary shots too, but have to wait a few months to get the full works done. Will report to the airport too, very good pickup. Don't want to go to the media as she is upset enough as it is and doesn't want any more attention on it.

Agree with everything said; try not to be too concerned, may have just be an insulin injection and anything untoward remote.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

That's good you've covered the medical tests. Although that should have been arranged by the airline concerned.

I understand the need not to go to the media. But the Airlines do need to be much more reactive than so far experienced. Sounds like they just hope you'll go away.

Wow I hope your folks end up cleared of all potential issues, certainly a scary moment for them.
Did they get the names of the people who refused to write up the incident report? The more details obtained at the time of the incident the more chance of action.

I'd also second the suggestion of a tweet to Emirates.

Yes dad took all that down, including exact times etc. I attempted the tweet option though emirates doesnt have an active twitter account. I instead have sent a followup email to emirates and CCed their PR department and one of their presidents.

Sincerely hope that this addressed by Emirates and that most importantly your parents end up all OK.

It is a disgrace the way that EK lounge staff have behaved.

Whilst you may not want the media attention I would sugest it as a last ditch effort to get some action from EK.

Mrs Ansett and I are still stunned by this and would like to wish you and your family a good xmas and an even better new year.

I would have kicked up a big fuss at the scene and if they still did nothing I would have gone to the media.

All good advice above, but irrespective of what you have done to date, I would write the old fashioned way, address it to the CEO of Sydney Airport, Cc to whoever you can identify high up at Emirates in Australia and send registered mail to both. cc further to anyone else you can think of.

Bit tricky as you aren't the affected party, but I assume you can say you are acting under authorization of your mother.

Ask for an appointment to discuss the matter with SYD and EK; tell them (not ask) that EK will be paying your mother's medical bills. Ask for a reply by a certain date / time. Follow up by phone.

That is, give 'em both barrels with no wriggle room.

ps if it were me, I would get a solicitor to write and send the letter.

I would also add that if not replied by the date specified it is deemed they accept liability and all cost occurred.
No idea on the legal standing of this, but a more sure way of getting some type of reply.

Straight to the doctor and straight to the lawyer. Emirates are a rogue operation who think that they can write their own laws and do what they want.

If that had happened to mrs GPH and the staff refused to act. I would have made an immediate call to airport security and the star/federal police. Whoever was easiest. In my experience
The minute you say " ok I will call the police" most or all resistance crumbles immodestly. Mind you this us of little comfort to you now. I suspect a call to one of the TV stations will get things moving more quickly.

What a nightmare story.

After the Doctor, I would certainly think worthwhile to spend a few hundred bucks on a lawyer letter telling them what a bunch of jerks they are. Just don't let the lawyer get out of control if the coast is clear.

Best of luck with it all.

Matt
