Having never tried First Class on Singapore Airlines before, I thought being on leave might be a good chance to try the product, as well as take a short holiday to Hong Kong for the best baked pork buns in the world.

I transferred my Commonwealth Award points to Velocity, then to Krisflyer. Overall a very decent rate, 1 AUD = 3 Commbank award points = 1.5 velocity points = 1.1 KF points.

Booking

Booked the flights with minimal hassle, and paid the $40 extra in taxes. I selected the Japanese Kyo - Kaiseki meal from "Book-the-cook", as well as seat 1A.

Check-in

All as quiet in the T3 check in area for First/Suites. Got my boarding pass within a few minutes. A nice private area, with sofas and armchairs.

Lounge

Was escorted to the TPR, and headed straight for one of only two computers in the lounge to book onward travel and accommodation.

I was given the food and drinks menu and asked if I'd like something to eat.

Food was quite average, but the champagne was very decent.

Boarding

9V-SWB, delivered in 2006

Was hoping for an aircraft with the new product, but unfortunately this wasn't to be.

Boarding was uneventful, via door 1L. Load was 5/8 in F.

All passengers were greeted by name and escorted to their seats.

The 2 cabin crew introduced themselves and offered pre-departure beverages, together with reading material, slippers/socks/eyeshades.

Food/Drinks

Kyo-Kaiseki first course - clams, prawns, lobster

Kyo-Kaiseki second course - soba with sushi

Kyo-Kaiseki third course - cod, pork cutlet, rice, soup

Overall, the presentation was good, but the taste average.

Typical day in Hong Kong

Bake barbecued pork buns from Che's Cantonese in Wan Chai - worth coming here just for this!

Conclusion:

A good flight, with all the boxes checked. The outgoing F product is really starting to show its age. The seat is quite uncomfortable in seat mode, and provides average comfort in bed mode. The CX hard product is far superior in my opinion.

I travelled on SQ2 a fortnight ago. I ordered the nasi lemak which was very tasty. But no Easter egg for me! Some of the planes are looking a bit tired, I agree. Haven't tried CX F between SIN and HKG so not sure what their product on that route is like.

does CX fly F between SIN and HKG? didn't think so but happy to be corrected..

Sorry, I just assumed they did as they fly F to other Asian cities (i have flown CX F between HKG and HND). My bad!

Depends on the metal they are operating into each City. Not all of the CX metal have F.

CX do, but they're prone to last minute substitutions of plane that result in F not being offered.
