Hi Folks,

I'm planning to fly Adelaide to Saigon in Y later this month on holidays, and currently deciding on the best flight options.

Both Malaysia and Singapore Airlines offer flights to SGN from ADL, both involving an overnight transit in their respective hubs.

Given pricing is similar (MH $25 dearer) and they are both rated as 'five star' airlines, interested to hear opinions as to which airline you would choose. Last flew SQ about 15 years ago, and last flew MH about 10 years ago, so my exeriences are likely to be quite outdated.

Although I would prefer a direct flight from Australia, given the only options are either a VN flight from MEL/SYD or the Jestar SYD-DRW-SGN hop on the a320, MH and SQ appear to be the only viable options.

Thoughts appreciated.

They're both v good quality airlines. SQ's service is rather more polished, but I personally prefer the more down to earth approach of MH. I believe SQ IFE is a lot better; it's been a while since I've flown MH but it's hard to beat Krisworld. Legroom is much better on MH.

Having said all that, I reckon SIN is a more convenient hub than KUL for an overnight, as it's far easier nipping out to the city from SIN than it is from KUL. On a taxi it's 20 mins max going from Changi Airport to the city vs over 60 mins from KLIA, or 30 mins taking the MRT from Changi to anywhere in the city or the same time on the KLIA Express to Sentral station (factor in horrendous traffic jams if staying in the centre of KL). Depending on how long your transit is of course, but I always avoid overnighting at airports if possible.

Either SQ or MH are good carriers.

For the same price and similar timing I would fly SQ.

I have flown both: one 2 years and the other 3 years ago.

MH has better leg room
Food on each was good; MH probably had a more exotic taste but it was still nice.
Service on SQ is really good.
MH maybe aren't as good but sometimes SQ crews can be a bit robotic.
Both have similar IFE both excellent, maybe SQ is probably has more options but not enough to worry about.

If price was the same then I would go SQ, but if SQ wanted $100 more than MH then I would choose MH.

MH wins in the legroom stakes.

Compared to QF they are both better.

After flying SQ or MH you definitely don't want to fly Jetstar.

Having travelled in both in Y in the last year, I agree 100% with the above post:!::p

Aren't SQ attendants prettier? ;)

I remember my first ever flight with SQ many years ago - when I just starting my teenage years - and there was 5cents dropped on the aisle and the SQ sees it, looks at me, smiles and says "is that yours?" and silly me says yes with puppy like tail wagging happiness. And then she touched my hand as she passed the 5cents to me and then beaming smile, body hugging cheong-sum dress and I thought I was in love. LOL. (the things I reveal here on AFF).

I guess that depends if you like the Malay ladies or Chinese looking. I happen to think some of the Malay women are so sexy !

Anyway back O/T...
Either is good, if you go KUL then i would stay at KL Sentral hotel, there is 2 just above the station. I have stayed at one... and right now i have a brain freeze and cant remember what it was... thats right it was Le Meridien. Nice steak at there restaurant called 'Prime'.

Otherwise if you want a night out or something like that SIN is the pick, and so easy to get taxi's etc. Also hotels right now not so expensive.

Haven't yet flown SQ so can't comment on them.

With MH, the crew are fantastic, leg room is great and seats are generally quite comfortable. I flew MH in Y to Europe twice last year and the catering has really gone downhill compared to a few years ago. On the flight from KUL-SYD all they served was a brunch/breakfast after departure and then a small breadroll on a styrofoam tray wrapped in plastic before arrival.

Definetely SQ.

One other option If You don't mind paying for it is to get a Domestic Flight on Virgin Blue to Melbourne and get the redeye with Singapore Airlines straight through and eliminate the compulsory overnight in Singapore going over but on the way go straight through directly to Adelaide.

Having flown both carriers within the last 12 months, I hold both in high regard compared to other carriers. However if flying out of PER, I have found that MH's 777 are slightly more comfortable than SQ in whY. MH has AVOD where as SQ only had a loop system, which has not changed for about 6 or so years.

My opinions may change after experiencing the new SQ333's when they become more of a regular.

Hello everyone!
I've also flown MH and SQ in the past 12 months. Both airlines are very good. I always prefer MH because they have much better legroom, the seats are more comfortable, the service is excellent (as with SQ but friendlier), the food tastes better (but I always prefer the more exotic stuff) and there's a decent IFE system (but not as good as SQ).
The seats in Y on SQ's A380 are nowhere near as comfortable as on their older planes.
As for the overnight stopover, I prefer KL over Singapore. Sure, KLIA is further away from town but it costs almost the same by taxi in either city but, once you're in town, the cost of shopping and eating out is much cheaper.

Another Option You might have overlooked is getting a one way Adelaide to Melbourne last flight of the day Virgin Blue and flying straight through with Either SQ OR MH to Vietnam but on the way home go straight through either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur

It Eliminates having to overnight in the Airlines Home City going over and can be a little cheaper

Flew with both Airlines recently:
March MEL-KUL on MH - 747 - Economy Class
May to MEL-SIN-BKK on SQ - 777-300ER/747 - Economy Class

In flight service - Same on both. But you get pork on SQ. No piggy products on MH. MH FAs are bit more relaxed and slightly friendlier. Food seeemd to be catered out by same caterers. So, pretty much the same quality. Fish/Beef or Chicken tends to be the main meal choices. Prefer SQ, because I pre-ordered Seafood Oriental, got served before everyone else

Flight Attendents: I prefer SQ with their tight fitting uniform... and errr... more female attendents than MH (my perception....). If you are not watching KrisWorld, you can watch Miss Singapore contestants parading up/down the aisle. (Note: I am biased... so there!)

Passengers wise - Unfortunately, the MH flight I was on were dominiated by Indians and Middle Easterners. I found them to have offensive body smell even few rows apart. Plus they were pushy and rude against the FAs. (Note: I was born in Taiwan and grow up in Melbourne.) SQ on the other hand are more Anglo-Saxon business people and Chinese travelers. I prefer SQ in this case.

Airport - Changi is a much much better airport. I found the duty free (read Alcohol) to be cheaper and far more comfortable. Free Wifi anyone? T3 is just superb. KUL is small in comparison. Duty Free (with AUD$1 to RM2) was same or little bit more expensive than MEL. Toilet was cleaner at Changi I found.

Unless MH is significantly cheaper than SQ, otherwise SQ remain my 1st choice for its service, airport and comfort. (And fashion parade... one can dream... can't I?)

Note: I hope my missus doesn't read this post.
