I have a booked and confirmed MEL-CGK-MEL via SIN both ways on SQ in J class, both ways on A380 to SIN and back for cost of $4046. I was lurking and checked the price of just a MEL-SIN-MEL on A380 both ways and it was priced at $4650. Weird! It costs ~$600 more to just go to SIN. Wonder if you could book the same flight as I have, then cancel the SIN-CGK-SIN legs. Hell you might even get a refund of some kind and save even more cash. Even if no refund you still save overall.. Weird pricing strategy but I am sure someone has an answer to why it is done that way??

Same old story, supply and demand, with CX there will be people in the J cabin travelling to Australia that have paid $1000 each way for the seat, and they joined via a transfer flight at HKG. It would be interesting to dissect a flight and look at what each passenger paid for each seat, the time they paid and the country the fare was purchased in!

Royal Brunei has a strange one at the moment.

If you want to fly BNE BKK changing planes in Brunei in J the price is $1681 return.

If you fly BNE Brunei return in J the price is $3200.

This is not uncommon, merely a response to supply and demand, and competition in the market place. You would not be able to cancel the SIN-CGK-SIN legs, as they would need to reissue or at the least revalidate the ticket and charge the fare difference. What one could do, if the fare allows a stopover in SIN, is kill a few hours taking an excursion in J down SIN-CGK-SIN, it's only a 1.5 hr flight, so it wouldn't take that long.

Just been looking at HKG-SYD-HKG flights in April 11:

CX quotes $5074 for return in J

OR

$3874 return in J to take SIN-HKG-SYD-HKG-SIN

even with a positioning flight HKG-SIN that's still a $1,000 off the direct flights:shock:

I am actually going all the way to CGK, was just surprised it was dearer just to get to SIN alone.

The SQ pricing makes sense considering they are competing with GA on the Australia-Indonesia service. They need to make the fare semi-competitive otherwise why would you bother flying via SIN? There is a premium for SQ, fair enough, but when the difference is too great you might as well fly GA.

There will be a certain number of seats left over once direct Australia-Singapore demand is met. They've got to sell those seats somehow, so you might as well price attractively for connecting traffic.
