Having recently signed up for an Amex Plat charge card, I figure I should also open a SPG account - both for the FF mile conversion options it presents, and because I'll probably redeem some MR points to it to book some hotel nights for a planned holiday to the USA next year.

Does anyone know of any SPG sign-up bonuses currently running? I've Googled but haven't found much.

If not, does anyone know if they ever offer them, and if so, how frequently? I don't need the account quite yet so I can wait a little while for a signup bonus to appear.

Also, while I'm at it: any suggested reading material to help me start wrapping my head around the SPG program: how to best take advantage of it, find good value hotel redemptions, etc? I've started browsing the stickies on the FT SPG forum... but I figure there's probably other good resources out there too. Heh, I've just spent 6 months educating myself on how to best leverage FF programs thanks to AFF (and definitely still have some way to go!)... all I can think of right now is "here we go again" :D

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

in my humble opinion its not a good conversion rate amex to spg
much better to use for J or F tickets to the country you wish to travel and buy the hotels.

but Amex-SPG-AA is a very good route.

also SPG cash+points redemptions are often very good value for low value hotels,
and occasionally the higher tiers can be worthwhile for premium properties.

Key is to ensure you sigup for the regular quarterly bonuses, some better than others, and also keep track of other occasional bonus offers.

I dont think SPG offers sign up bonuses at all.

SPG allows you to merge different accounts held by one customer into one. Keeping this in mind, SPG would go broke in a few days as everyone will be opening infinite numbers accounts for bonuses and then combining them???

but Amex-SPG-AA is a very good route.

I do AMEX-SPG-US Airways. Pretty much the same redemption level, but *A offers a much wider range of carriers e.g. when you want to do a longhaul J/F to Europe for example, you can get it, without having to book 330 days ahead!
