South Korean troops shoot at civilian airliner by mistake | Reuters

(Reuters) - South Korean troops fired at a commercial aircraft flying near the tense sea border with North Korea, misidentifying it as one of the communist North's jet fighters, but no damage occurred, local news media reported on Saturday.

Bit of a concern. Although it appears the possibility of any damage/injury/etc were slim to none, it's still not good!

Still a scary thought isn't it...

You'd think anyone flying in that area would be clearly identifying themselves. Imagine the consequences if it hadn't been a miss?!

It is easy to forget how tense things are over there, especially when in Seoul, strangely enough. Everything seems so normal and civilised.. it does not seem like a country that has been at war for 50+ years. I was there in March, and the descent on my CX flight was hairy enough (heavy snow and fog) without being shot at! Though I guess the benefit of bad weather is perhaps it helps hide the plane from military fire..
:D

Not the military's finest moment...

1 Surely there are protocols to check who you're shooting at before you shoot at them
2 If you do shoot at them surely you use anti-aircraft designed weapons not assault rifles

If they did think it was a spy plane then they should have fired ehat seeking missiles... etc... I'm not sure if you know but the K2 is the Korean Army's version of the M16.

I think you missed the point....nothing to do with spy planes.

Ok well I'm not sure what your point is to be honest but my point is that if the military determined the need for action it shouldn't have been assault rifles firing at a jet plane. In saying that I'm glad for the passengers that the military didn't use proper hardware but I'm a bit concerned from the Korean people that the military didn't use the proper hardware...

I believe the point relates to the link provided about the Russians shooting down a Korea airliner. Ironic payback? I don't think we can say that some dudes shooting off randomly can be referred to as the military determined a need for action. Infantry acting above their pay grade more likely, otherwise they would have fired something more appropriate.

Was it a Russian plane? didn't note that, I was just shocked someone was stupid enough to fire an assault rifle at a plane.

Having been in the Korean army and knowing how they reconcile bullets, beat the living cough out of you for stepping out of line and being stationed at one of the biggest flash points in the world I doubt it was just a couple of people acting above their pay grade. This sort of intentional stupidity could cost a lot of lives. You can expect brazen acts from the North but you're far less likely to see it from the South. Are you aware of not only the multi-nation military presence but also the rediculous amount of media there...

What's more likely to have happened was that a couple of new naive soldiers who are on edge were over reacting (and poorly reacting). The situation over there isn't the best at the moment as I'm sure you know with the recent fire fights with the North.

If it was an act of retaliation then the guys would be coughing, peeing and coughping blood at this moment...

Umm  "maybe they thought it was aeroflot".

Yep, that's what I was referring to.
