Just wanted to report on my experience with LATAM in Business on a quick trip SYD-AKL this week. It was great. Very friendly service and one of the best J seats I've been in for a while (I travel MH a lot and it...isn't). Not sure how I've managed it but this was my first go-round in a 787. Really great aircraft. What's more my other half complemented it too and that IS unusual! Cheers...

I flew J latam from SCL - BOG. Service was good but food was poor. Seats were comfortable enough.

LATAM's 787 is definitely comfortable. Not the newest or most attractive configuration, but if you are travelling with a partner is definitely ideal. I've flown SCL-LIM (around the same flight time from SYD-AKL) and it was a great alternative. Not overly expensive, good service, although catering and IFE a bit subpar from QF.

I liked the seating but felt the food was a bit average and the staff not as polished as some other airlines. It was a "sit down, heres your meal and now shut up and leave us alone" vibe. And Im a low maint flyer, I rarely ever ring the bell.

But, enjoyed our flight, enjoyed the seats and space and would happily fly them again - might just pack a snack for the flight.

I flew AKL-SYD on LATAM, whilst the seat and IFE were good.. the crew essentially disappeared after the meal service.
However, well worth the short trip IMO.

I have flown SCL - LIM and also enjoyed the seat. Food was average. Crew pleasant and were actively distributing pillows and blankets which was nice even though it was a day time flight.

I am glad everyone seems to have liked the LATAM seats. We will shortly be flying Doha/Bacelona/Doha on the LATAM 787's on lease to Qatar. When the trip was booked both legs were on a Qatar 787 with 1-2-1 in J so I was a bit disappointed that they were replaced with the 2-2-2 layout in these planes..

I have flown LA in J regularly over many years. I’ve always been quite happy, although not overwhelmed,

Why is LA leasing birds to QR?

I've flown LATAM a few times in J. Travelling solo I don't find the seat great (bit too open) but it is comfortable.
Service has always ben good. Agree they are not that active in walking through the cabin and offering things on that short sector. But whenever I've asked for a coffee or water I've had an instant response and then returns to see if I'd like another or anything else.

My various experiences with Latam have been SYD-AKL-SYD. I have always found the J cabin (2x2x2) in the B787 comfortable and the service good. The food used to be a full meal to AKL but they reduced it to a hot snack because the said "we arrive mid afternoon". They ignored the fact that we departed Oz at 11.30 am and so the luncheon service was appropriate. I do not know if it has changed or remained a hot snack. The staff were always attentive and polite.

Good point. Even as a couple, I would now go for the middle seats so both have access.
3 of 4 times I've flown them I've had an empty seat next to me. The other time I saw on expertflyer an empty pair (1A/C or equivalent), at the Gate asked to be moved and was done. Small sample size but cabin no more than half full on my flights so the lack of privacy a bit less of an issue.

Another one who is happy with LATAM J in 787, traveling solo.

I've often found the crew not confident in English, so not very engaging, but not a biggie.

Well, a thread about Latam - I feel the need to express some personal views.....

First up, I have flown more Latam than Qantas, and am P1 with Qantas.... (had to "big note" myself so I can be perceived as an authority :) )

Latam is slowly heading down a path of losing some of their previous shine - they historically were Sth America's premium airline, and have been exceptionally succesful as a business, effectively absorbing almost all competition in the continent (only Colombia's Avianca and Argentina's Aerolineas provide some competition now) But they are heading down the slippery path to almost LCC status - they have done that first with domestic routes (not just in Chile but also Colombia, etc), offerring tickets with small things like baggage as add-ons. They don't even have a domestic lounge anymore in Santiago!!!! And I feel their international product is also slipping, even though it is still quite good.

A couple of years ago they opened their great international lounge in Santiago, truly a good "hard product" - ample space and showers and rest areas, etc, and they have great wine, but the food is woeful. And it seems the lounge sort of stopped half-way through development - for example the children's area never got finished with the entertainment they had promised.

As for the flights, I consistently hear that the staff disappear - I am very much in agreement with Rooflyer that part of this is that the staff tend to avoid speaking english - I tend to get fantastic service as a spanish-speaker.

I do not like the 787 hard-product simply because the seats are way too short for abnormally tall people like myself, but can understand that for most of humanity they are nice planes.

I find it intriguing that Latam would lease 787's to Qatar??? Love to see more info on this. Almost all of this year Latam has been hit very badly by the problem of maintenance delays for their RR-engined 787's - meaning many are offline. Latam has had to lease long term replacement aircraft via Wamos Air to cover the shortfall - almost all their BOG-SCL flights are Wamos A330's, and they even have a Wamos 747 doing SCL to the USA. So I cannot understand how they could have aircraft available to lease to others???

If you get a Wamos flight, the planes are older, but the Spanish staff (all Wamos aircraft are wet-leased) are fantastic.

I made my previous comments about Latam long-haul - for a trans-tasman it certainly beats the pants off a QF 737.

From the horses mouth. https://www.qatarairways.com/en/pre...rt-for-qatar-airways-and-the-state-of-qa.html

I think part of the reason is due to the slow arrival of the A350's at QR - partly caused I believe by some of QR's own actions.

I read the linked article and now it makes far more sense - it is not 787's, but "Latam Group A350's" that will be leased to Qatar.

LAN never bought A350's - these were ordered by TAM before TAM was absorbed by LAN to create Latam. So thgis is probably a good way for Latam to use aircraft they did not really want....

(EDIT: Oops I just read your second response so I am probably providing info you don't need but I will leave it in anyway.)

Juddles

Here is some more discussion about these leased planes. I recall lots of delays with the A350's arriving at QR. If I remember correctly, the early ones were delayed by QR being "super fussy" about their finish. The newer ones have apparently been delayed due to problems fitting their new J "suites". QR has a 10%stake in LATAM so that may have helped the lease go ahead.
