Reported in this morning's Adelaide Advertiser.....

Saudi Arabia
Smoker Flogged
A Sudanese man has been sentenced to 30 lashes for smoking on a domestic flight.
The unnamed man had refused to put out his cigarette on a flight to Jeddah. He was arrested by police when the sircraft landed and sentenced to 30 lashes by a local court.
The man apologised and said he was attending a clinic to help him stop smoking.

I wonder how they deal with drunken yobos over there?

Most Saudis wouldn't have seen too many drunks. Probably wonder where/how the grog was procured. Then cut off a hand or something....

Any Saudi male that has flown overseas would most likely have seen drunks. In particular I remember (Mar 1978) a very irate Iran Air stewardess taking an older Saudi gentleman apart because the younger male members of his traveling party were well and truly "gone" on a flight Shiraz --> Dhahran.

Bangkok (or even London) in the early 1980s was at times equally enlightening.

And yes a number of westerners I worked with departed rather sooner than they would have liked for alcohol related indiscretions.
