Only do this less than 30 days before travel, then you take the DSLR with you and claim back the GST. I believe that the prices might be a bit more than HK but the again you will still have access to an AUS warranty etc.

Yes I've been looking at a few of the local & reputable online shops, there is still about a $200 AUD saving in HK but after GST the difference may not be worth the hassle. Not worried about the tourist scheme as I'll claim the GST back through my business anyway, better than having to lug an extra DSLR out of the country.

Thanks for everyone who contributed to this query. Just a quick update.

Ended up ordering online through www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au which had a great price, camera arrived 3 business days later from .... Hong Kong! It actually worked out cheaper than picking one up in HK. Luggage would have been a problem too, we ended up with 2 extra suitcases than what we took over, and all were full to bursting. Although still way under the baggage limit as we were travelling Upper Class on Virgin Atlantic.

Just a side note, I was advised by check-in staff at the airport that the baggage limits for upper class are changing from 30kg limt (3 bags) per passenger in upper class, to 32kg limit per bag (limit of 3 bags) per passenger, so 96kgs! I thought this sounded wrong but they confirmed it for me. So my travelling party would have had close to 400kgs under the new policy, the mind boggles...
