Hi all

looking for advice on a SIM card fro when we head to Bali and Thailand later this year. It is our first time to Bali but have been to Thailand regularly. Last time we were in Thailand, I used a local AIS sim and that was OK locally for calls and some data but setting it up was painful.

Our bank now uses the SMS "one time pin" so I'll need access to my text messages sent from Oz.

Any advice and guidance greatly appreciated.

Kevin

You will need two handsets. One for a local SIM And one for the Australian SIM - there is no way a local SIM (or any other SIM in fact) can receive SMS bound for another number.

Check your roaming setup too - you may find you cannot access the phone anyway. I use Amaysim, and was in a spot of both of bother in Austria as I was unable to make a payment until I crossed they border back into Germany. Most prepaids limit the countries you can roam in, but configure your plan right, and you will never get bill shock. I only ever travel with $10 credit. That said, Amaysim works in both of these countries.

Alot of cheap handsets in Asia are dual SIM - a good one can be bought for less than $60 - then you can still use your Aussie SIM and the Indo then Thai SIM cards when you are in the respective countries. Done this plenty of times without any hassles. Do your homework before you arrive so you know what you want when you get there.

I found AIS in Thailand quite OK for calls but from what I have seen it is not easy to setup for data.

I also have a suspicion that AIS data is how my Samsung phone contracted a virus.

I used AIS while in Thailand for 4weeks. Went into a telewiz shop and got a SIM card and also got a data pack. 3gig was bout $15 and with that also got a log in and password for their hotspots
