We were sent to the w-a-y inferior Gold Kris lounge in Changi last week. I am Plat, my partner is Gold, we were on a Silkair flight in Y.

Today's question: we fly through Changi tommoz and have biz tix on SQ. One ticket is a VA code (full fare biz paid) the other a Kris redemption.

Will we get in? Will they allow us both a plus one, as we have the adult kids with us?

Thanks!

You will get access to Silver Kris lounge by virtue of your business class tickets (irrespective of whether paid or redemption). However, from memory this will not entitle you to bring a guest into the lounge (but it doesn't hurt to try!).

However, you could dump the adult kids (if they are in Y) in the Krisflyer Gold lounge (where you are entitled to a guest by virtue of your VA status), and then yourselves move over to the Silver Kris lounge.

Wait, Silver Kris is a better lounge than Gold Kris?

Confusing isn't it. Silver Kris lounge is better!

The technical terms are "Silver Kris" lounge it relates to the lounge itself, and is tied up I guess with Kris as a symbol. The inferior lounge is "Krisflyer Gold" lounge, a title which relates to the status that can access the lounge.

Confusing for sure, but not when you sit on the one size fits all chairs, and enjoy the lack of anything much. Well you do get wifi and drinks, but not even a toilet, in the Gold lounge. Silver is heaven by comparison.

Sure the Silver Kris lounge is better but the KrisFlyer Gold lounge is not that bad.

A couple of weeks ago I spent ~7 hours in this lounge from ~1:00am through to ~8:00am. Lounge was quiet. There was still food on offer at ~2:00am when I was asked if I wanted to eat as they were going to clear the food away. Breakfast was out again at ~5:00am and wasn't too bad. Enough variety in the drinks to not worry.

The lounge is clean. Only a few people in the through the night and quiet enough for me to get some sleep on the chair. Only needed to go to toilet once and it was a short walk outside.

Did they say why, I thought WPs got access to the SilverKris lounge.

Edit: ah, forgot OP was travelling Y. Its KrisGold for WPs.

Pretty sure it's only for SQ Suites, First, Business and PPS Club members. The T3 Silver Kris lounge already gets uncomfortable busy during peak periods. Opening it up to status pax in Y would only make matters worse IMHO.

Plus star alliance business and first class passengers (.travelling on other star alliance carriers).

I know it's been said a million times before, I do think that KF Gold lounge is a huge disadvantage.

It's the one thing that drives me nuts about being WP with VA. While QF WP pax get access to some pretty nice lounges while travelling in Y (often F lounges), we get this flagship lounge without bathrooms.

Pretty poor really, considering how crucial SQ is to VA's international network.

That said, it's not an awful place to spend time – it's just well below par compared to QF.

Whilst the lounge in SIN is below par compared to QF, are people travelling in Y going to redirect their business away from SQ/VA to QF just because of the lounge? Many look at the overall picture, the inflight product, scheduling choice, available connections, quality of connecting airline (MI/SQ vs 3K), price, etc. Even the lounges at other end (if you are non-WP, the MEL QF J lounge, for example, is not really that much better than the SQ J lounge at MEL).

My boss (VA Plat travelling on an SQ Business ticket) was able to guest me (VA Gold, travelling Y on an SQ ticket) into the Silver Kris @ Changi yesterday.

Absolutely – I agree it's only one part of the decision. But every part of the brand is important, and all it takes is a couple of negatives to sway flyers away from one camp. Hence the lounge competition in PER right now.

You are right, and maybe from VA's perspective it is the broader appeal of the overall package to Australians that this can make or break (although I'm still dubious that is big an issue as people make out). But from SQ's point of view you it's the opposite - let more people into the at times already overcrowded SKL at Changi, and you start diminishing the value of that lounge to biz pax.

The solution would be of course showers in the KFG lougne. Still don't understand why couldn't maintain a shower or two in the KFG lounge, or even vouchers to paid showers. (The toilets issue for me is no big deal, as Changi is an airport where toilets are generally maintained to standards better than a lot of lounges in other airports, and not that far of a walk).

I completely agree. I don't really have an issue with a separate lounge, and I actually like having access to a nicer lounge when I'm in J, so I appreciate that.

Here's hoping that the upcoming refurbs do something about the size, toilets and showers. The food is certainly fine.

All this time I thought the KFG was the better one!! Doh!! Makes me regret that last 7hr stopover at SIN I had between 1-8am!

I cant remember, if flying into Changi on SQ J, can I access the SilverKris lounge at T3 on arrival?

thanks,

The Krisflyer Gold lounge is a joke and is outdone by domestic VA lounges by a fair margin. It's so underwhelming considering its the airlines own home port. This is also the lounge that *G go to as well when they would get better SQ lounges in places like sydney or even the NZ lounge. Remeber *A doesn't have an alliance WP level above Gold even if that particular airline does, unlike OW. This is the exact situation SQ has, where a WP-esk *A traveller gets relegated to gold outside of their home network even though SQ has PPS.

As for would a VA WP direct the or business elsewhere? It's a really tough call when you compare SQ to EY. The products the airlines deliver each has their advantages. The A330 is a great bus but EY swapped the 330 out for the direct dreamliner service that many people would opt for over the 330. With EY loads being heavy it's easier to snag a shadow (or a row of 4 to yourself) on SQ. However the lounge access EY offer VA WP blows SQ clean out if the water.

All I want is a 2-4-2 dreamliner with the great seats EY have and the pitch of the SQ A330, Direct to AUH where I can get treated luke royalty in the EY lounges accessible by VA WP. Haha I can dream :'(

FWIW The SQ SIN-LHR and the EY AUH-LHR are pretty well the same in terms of 777 and A380 on each. If you can snag a EY A340 then they're always pretty good!
