Hi all

Has any one here ever ordered on line from a US retailer (say a pair of running shoes) and then arranged for pickup from a UPS or Fedex store?

I will be passing through the US soon and I want to make sure the shoes arrive in time - I will only be in town for a few days.

Does any one have any other suggestions (other than shipping to a friend or shipping them to OZ).

Thanks

I previously used Shipito a fair bit to ship to NZ, but they do have warehouses in the states. I see no reason you couldn't have the retailer send it to shipito and either collect from their warehouse (Whichever one you send it to) or have Shipito send it to you somewhere (i.e Retailer send it to Shipito's warehouse that you select (they have a few), then you get shipito to send it to you or collect from them).

Most hotels would accept and hold a parcel for you. I have done this several times before. I usually ring the hotel in Q and double check first, esp. their postal address. You will address the parcel with your name, followed by "hotel guest arriving such and such date....", followed by the hotel name and address.

I have had a parcel del to The Mirage in LAS and it arrived OK. The Hotel then charged me $7 for the privilege

Ouch!

I have also had parcels delivered to US hotel rooms. I have checked with the hotel beforehand, and it's never been a problem...and I've never been charged!

I bought a jacket from Patagonia on the mainland and they agreed to ship it to their HNL store at no cost and hold it there for me to p/up 4 weeks in advance of arrival. Perhaps an option?

I'm usually visiting friends in the US, so I'll often collect a shipment to save on postage. Levenger, who produce lovely stationery, only ship to Australia via Fedex, so I try to avoid that when possible.

This last trip I collected a doona and sheet set for my sister. Saved her $150.

And cost me $99 when I found it wouldn't fit in my luggage setup and had to drop into a department store in Lansing, Michigan to buy an el-cheapo duffle.

Ironically, the time it took me to buy that thing and to purchase some roadtrip food for the four hour drive to Chicago meant that I caught a traffic bulge and missed out on getting to the Levenger outlet in Marshall Fields. ***sigh***

That would have cost me a bunch anyway. Saved heaps, I guess.

I like Levenger a lot. I discovered it on my first trip to Boston. It was freezing outside and I spent a lot of time in the shopping centre that was attached to one of the Marriott hotels. :D

Some hotels say it isn't permitted on their reservations page. Some charge (either way, you probably should be tipping if someone comes up with it). But if the hotel is OK with it...

Las Vegas hotels seem to charge for this. The hotels I stayed in San Francisco and Washington did not....a quick phone call to the hotel is a must, tho, in partic. to check their postal address!

Oops. Forgot about this thread. Thanks all for the good advice.

Just need to find a hotel in San Jose and I'm set.

Never had a problem at a Vegas hotels, though many do charge. As stated, if no charge, be sure to tip!

As for your hotel in San Jose, if you're not set on a particular, why not try Hotwire or similar for a "mystery" hotel. Have always done very well - and you can use betterbidding.com to identify what you're likely to get.

You can use the hotel as others suggest. However check also with the retailer. On a recent US trip I ordered a pair of shoes online with Nike; they allow you to nominate a pickup location at most of their stores. So we ordered while in San Francisco and picked up the shoes at their NY Times Square shop a week or so later. Maybe others offer this as well.

Last year I went a bit overboard with pre-departure shopping before going to NYC. We arrived to find a stack of boxes nearly as tall as me in our room :) It was like Christmas!

Heh. Getting them back home while filling the baggage limits can be a problem!

Relatively new services like amazon locker can also be handy. I picked up some goods in New York from one as my hotel wanted to charge a $25 handling fee (tip included apparently) for parcel delivery/holding.

I frequently have stuff delivered to hotels. As a rule i've found Hyatt properties are excellent if it's just a few days (had a few small things shipped to Hyatt's and Andaz properties in the USA and UK) and so long as they're small and not taking up too much room then it's good.

I know someone who had a small box (probably about a shoe box size) shipped and it got to the hotel far too early. Was charged a storage fee (that was a Hyatt).

Time it so it arrives as close to your arrival as possible or a few days earlier and give the hotels a heads-up. They're usually pretty good.

One the packaging was dispensed with it was easy - and part of the order was two eBags MLC Motherlode Weekender bags :)
