Queensland v Tasmania in Brisbane. To win the shield, QLD need only to draw. For TAS to win, they need to win the match.

And ... Sheffield Shield final: Day one washed out yet it hardly rained all day.:mad:

A non-draining outfield? Competition final? Really? Rarely rains in Brisbane does it?

What a bunch of administrative plonkers.

Qld wins the shield then. Bit dodge. Ricky would be having an apoplectic.

To be fair, it has been extremely wet up here for the last couple of weeks, and everything is completely water logged. Whilst it is not raining "much" compared to the normal downpours, the ground is so soaked that everything which comes down is just sitting on the surface.

Hardly rained is still 5mm or so of rain.

Still, there is not much incentive to play on, is there:? I seem to recall a Tasmanian home final where the pitch was referred to as a road.

But that's the point! It HAS been very wet up there for weeks, the ground is known to drain poorly and yet there was no apparent thought to maybe transferring the match to another ground. Even the Sheffield Shield final only gets a couple of hundred spectators, so there must have been some other first grade arena in Queensland that could have hosted it? They could see this happening a week out.

From the Courier Mail: Sheffield Shield final reduced to a farce after light sprinkle ruins opening day’s play

QUEENSLAND’s push to move all Sheffield Shield matches to Allan Border Field has hit a submerged log with the first day of the competition final abandoned in broad daylight.
...
But Border Field, once used as a dump, tends to catch water like a spilt beer on a billiard table,

Like I said - administrative plonkers.

Adelaide Oval nice and dry but the final wouldn’t have been played there either. Footy now takes over. So glad the finals MrP have been in where footy had its correct place in the world.

Well, depends which side of the fence you are on. With Queensland only needing a draw, what do you think the local opinion would be if they moved to a ground that gave the opposition more of a chance? More like cynical administrative inaction me thinks.

It’s an inherent issue with the finals format.

5 day match on a neutral ground would be the better option. First placed side gets choice of bowl/field first.

The final has been introduced in the last few years. Previously the side that finished top after all matches won. Seems fairer. The current GF just means the home team has to play for a draw.

Obviously need a result, but you'd think there could be some sort of Duckworth-Lewis type of determination of the 'better' side in the final in the event of a wash-out, rather than one side starting with an inherent advantage.

Wonder how the match is going? just looked it up on ABC site ... and nothing at all comes up for current Shield.

Ah. Cricket.com.au ... Tas 6/320 after 93 overs.

What can I say. It’s cricket.

I thought the final had been around for decades...?

Can't find it on-line yet, but just heard on the radio that Tas captain, George Bailey has made a tremendously 'sporting' declaration on the final day of the SS final.

Bailey declared Tas at about 1/166, leaving QLD to get about 120 in a session to win. Looks like they'll get it.

A draw would have meant QLD would have won anyway, but the declaration by Bailey means it is a contest to the end (Tas conceivably could have got a miracle batting collapse by QLD) and QLD wins the Shield by actually winning, not because the match was a draw.

Bailey should get a ticket to South Africa ... but then who would be captain - him or Tim Paine :)

Either I reckon.
