Seat assignment limitations?

Last weekend I did an east coast triangle trip on Y choice fare. I preselected seats even booking. But closer to the departure, I wanted to see if I could buy myself and +1 to the Economy X seats.

Even when EF showed availability, I had no way of trying that on the app. The images are after OLCI, at about T-3 hours. Onboard, there were vacant X seats, matching what EF had shown. There currently is a system limitation somewhere blocking this kind of a seat change.

What's the trick needed to get into an X seat?

The native seat selection within the App doesn't appear to allow selecting Economy X seats, presumaby as it doesn't have a native capability to allow purchases for those member who aren't Platinum.

You need to use the web booking engine instead, which you can do within the app by selecting "Manage", then selecting "Edit trip" and then selecting "Manage seats".
