If I have an itinerary like CHC-MEL-SYD on VA metal ticketed by NZ, what would be the SC earn be?

I assume CHC-MEL would be classified as trans-Tasman, so would typical earn as discount economy (e.g. fare class T).

What about the MEL-SYD leg though (e.g. fare class S)? It doesn't fall under any of these buckets listed on the VA website:

  • Air New Zealand - Trans Tasman: L, G, S, K, P, V, W, T, Q, H, M
  • Air New Zealand - Long Haul: L, G, S, K, P, V, W, T, Q, H, M
  • Air New Zealand - Domestic New Zealand: Q, H, M, V, L, G, W, T
Would it earn as if it trans-Tasman (the entire ticket is categorised as trans-Tasman), or be entirely ineligible as it's none of the above?

For that matter, what if it was VA metal, VA ticket? Would the entire thing earn as if it was trans-Tasman? I presume so, but how domestic legs as part of an international itinerary doesn't seem to be mentioned here: https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Earn/StatusCredits/

I guess the latter scenario never came up when domestic/international SCs were earned at the same rate (before the Getaway restrictions)!

I think it just earns at whatever the earn is for MEL-SYD buying VA domestic for the Mel-Syd leg. AFAIK the sc earn doesn't change no matter who you ticketed it through it's just down to fare type. I would buy on NZ then when it got to the VA sector domestic just switch into the VA FF#. What changes I think is the points? At least that's what I've noticed.

Anyway came to find info on VA points earning. I switched an NZ ticket NZ domestic to VA earn. AKL-ROT - earned all of 28 points!! 35 would be expected as the crow flies and looking just now I couldn't find Rotorua or Tauranga on the VA mileage calculator. Looking back at a previous comparison AKL-TRG was 68 points. Same number sc but these 2 cities are only 45 min drive away from each other. I'm not sure if this is just part of the new points earn stuff this year or more reflective of the deteriorating relationship. Anyway, did it for the sc but still a bit surprised. Both tickets were flexi's, in fact the ROT one was a flexiplus (NZ system as I flew in on EK so needed the flexibility to cancel, change times etc). Have the return flight yet to credit but likely to be similar. Yeee-ouch!! Once next target reached will have to keep that all in mind and think seriously about not crediting NZ domestic to VA.
