SAN-LAX-MEL check through?

Greetings All,

Have SAN-LAX-MEL coming up next week. AAsomething then QF94. Just wondering if anyone can advise on the transfer at LAX and whether bags will be checked through or need to be picked up and re-checked in LAX. Thanks in advance,

Separate bookings or both flights on the one PNR?

Did something similar recently (on seperate PNRs AA to QF) and no problem to check all the way through.
