Hi all,

I have been looking at a few Samsonite luggage, particularly the Cosmolite and Firelite carry-on's. It seems that retailers rarely charge the full price, for example, walk into any Victoria Station, Strandbags and even David Jones, these luggage pieces are heavily discounted at 40% off, on occasion, you could also see 50% off the marked price.

My question is, why are Samsonite luggage so heavily discounted all the time, its not like the prices change, they seem to always be 40% off as standard.

Also if anyone owns any of the hard side luggage with 'curve' technology (Cosmolite, Firelite, Liteshock), how do you find them?

Thanks in advanced, it would be much appreciated if these questions are answered! :)

I'm not sure which one I have but it has the large grooves. Love the fact it has a combo lock as I try and leave my gear in hotels in the bag locked to avoid temptation vs bags not locked.

it um.....dents easily. Got off a flight and a third of it was crumpled. There were a number of gasps all round :D. I was a bit peeved as I had wine in it but all was fine in the end. Just punched out the dents and good as new! I need to differentiate my bag a bit from others because there are a lot of others!

I miss soft fabric bags. So much easier to zip open compartments rather than the hinge on samsonite as you take up the whole floor opening it!

Hi all,

You can often get an extra 5-10% off the original price (before the stores 40-50% discount is taken off) at the DFO / outlet shopping type of centres if you are visiting from another state - sometimes just living xx_Km's away will make you eligible.

Look online first, but it is generally just a matter of calling into the centre management office and showing proof of address.

I have the carry on cosmolite (and a large one as well) and love it. Never had anything damaged inside even though the outside looks like it's been belted around.

A little more expensive than some of the other ones around but I'd find it hard to purchase anything else if I needed to update (which after circa 6 years of 60-70+ trips a year I still don't need to).

Couldn't recommend highly enough.

As for the reasons why they are always 40% off... can't help you there.

I have had a Cosmolite suitcase (second largest) for about 8 years and have found it excellent, with regular use. The newer models have different wheels which must be an improvement. After 8 years the rubber hinges on the back are starting to look a little worn but I hope I can get them replaced. I paid the 40% off price which seems to be the standard price. I recall one member posting that the baggage handlers in the UK managed to split one shell, but QF replaced it.

Some might say it's just psychology... we love a good sale in Australia, and getting something 40-50% off sounds like a real bargain... forget the fact that it's still quite an investment to purchase Samsonite. Perhaps it makes you think you're getting something more valuable at a lower price, whereas if they just advertised the sale price as the RRP, we'd probably think it's too expensive and not value-for-money.

It's not just Samsonite that is discounted regularly. It seems to be standard for all the luggage sellers to quote the RRP and then show their discounted one for lots of different types of bags, especially the common ones like Antler, American Tourister etc.

FWIW we have 2 of the Samsonite True Frame 76cm (85L) hardside spinners and have found them very good. Picked them because they close with latches rather than a zip. We feel it provides better security. The paint on the tops of the surface ridges has scratched off a bit but no dents etc so far.

Have just ordered the new Samsonite Smart Top 50cm cabin bag - 2 wheels, softside and 1.8kg. This bag has a good sized pocket in the top which I haven't seen before - handy for phones, chargers, tickets, etc.
It is 110cm overall but because its designated a 50cm rather than a 55cm we're counting on it avoiding the Russian roulette of VA's 105cm rule for domestic.
