Yes - I was saddened too - and I dont even follow Rugby but knew of Jonah. MrP is in All Black territory for the week and they will be in mourning. The Kiwi spirit is wrapped up in their sporting achievements.

Sounds as though it was sudden but sadly many potential causes for this in soemone with nephrotic syndrome with a transplant.
Remember watching him in the company of Kiwis on an AB tour of South Africa in the 90s
He certainly changed rugby and sounded as if he was a good man off the field too

As tragic as it was, given how long he ago he was diagnosed with kidney problems, he was never destined to have old bones.

Though he had survived >10 years since his transplant and studies have shown if you have done that at least a 50% chance of surviving the next 15 years.
But heart disease is common and it sounds like that is the cause of death.

Very sad news.

He had been on dialysis since 2011 following rejection.

Much more than 10 years since diagnosis. Transplant was in 2004, so just over 10 years.

Ten years since diagnosis, not since transplant.
No it is since transplant-but was unaware he was back on dialysis and it is if 10 years of a functioning graft for that survival.
Thanks PF.

I shall mourn his loss like many NZ Rugby fans, in AKL this weekend, so it will be interesting to see how the national mood is

While not wanting to play it down too much, as tragic as this is there are many more in the same or worse situation.

A very young life. Fans will remember his on-field brilliance. Sad news.

Quite a shock - he looked good in recent interviews. Enjoyed watching some of his play again on the various TV news bulletins tonight.

What's so amazing is that it's been widely publicised that given his illness he probably only ever played at 80% of his potential. Imagine what he would have been if he'd got to 100%

The most destructive ball runner I can remember in rugby but such a gentle soul of the field. So soon after the tragic death of Jerry Collins too. RIP.

I think Jonah would have a chuckle over this.
I received an email from a friend in the uk this morning. Here it is verbatim. : very sorry to here about your Jona Lumly dying at such a early age . I'm sure the rugby world will be a worst place without him
