Has any one got any recommendations of hotels to stay in either Rio de Janeiro or Buenos Aires? Looking for hotels 4 star and above in a central (safe) location.

Thank you in advance

BA - go to El Conquistador, the Chorizo's from the family restuarant across the road are the finest you'll find anywhere...

In Rio I stay at the Mecure Apardor... it's not 4 star but it's quite decent.

In BA we stayed at the Sofitel ( Recoletta) which was sensational and in a very safe and central area plus we also stayed at the trendy Bobo Hotel ( Palermo) also a great room and a safe area with lots of bars, clubs and funky shopping...Remember that taxis are very cheap and are everywhere and you can go across town for around $10

Yeah both in safe areas,

Rio the place is in between Copcabana and Inpaema beaches - very safe.

BA - very safe, it's 2 blocks from florida street and the like...

I stayed at the Windsor Excelsior last year which was pretty reasonable, and will probably stay there again this year.
Right on the beachfront at Copacabana. They have other hotels in Rio as well; windsorhoteis.com.br
Both Copacabana and Ipanema beachfronts are relatively safe.
Like most places though, keep your valuables out of sight, don't wear any 'bling' and carry minimum cash & cards with you.

Great tips. Thanks...although it appears getting accommodation in Rio over NY is going to be difficult

BA - Loi Suties - right near Recoletta was great - room was large, breakfast included, plenty of restaurants so no need to wander far afield at night and quite safe. October 2008.

During the day we wandered around the main parts of town without any worries (more than the usual precaustions wandering around any large city).

Would definitely stay there again.

Cant help with RdJ - still on the "to-do" list.

Stayed in BA at the brand-new Novotel on Av Corrientes in late May/June. It's very safe, not near the other major hotels, but very central and quite a few restaurants within walking distance and also next door is the super-cheap Pizzeria Guerin. Good rates and a great breakfast included. Also right near the metro station. You can't go wrong

In relation to Rio, found a great site Ipanema.com

It has hotels listed a reduced rates when compared to the aggreated sites eg expedia etc...plus availability when the other sites do not.

Finally decided on Best Western Sol Ipanema Hotel @ Ipanema RDJ. Go a great deal through the Best Western site.

Also after reading many reviews Ipanema seemed slightly safer than Copacabana

Still working on Buenos Aires, so happy to take more recommendations. Thanks

We stayed at the Mine hotel which is located in Palemo Soho. Convenient, safe location and brilliant knowledgable staff. Mrs _e and I couldn't recommend it more.

Enjoy your trip, especially the wine and steaks!!!
