REX Regional Express Fleet

The average age of the Regional Express fleet is 17.5 years - does anyone know if they will start renewing their fleet, and is it worth it?
 
No, they won't. The SAABs arent in production anymore so any kind of fleet renewal will mean a change of aircraft entirely. Well maintained however they can keep going a lot longer than that.
 
Thanks for your input mate :) Wasn't sure if 17.5 years was old for a prop or not.

I wonder how they will compete be surrounded by Virgin Australia and Qantas link running with far better cost:seat ratios?
Speculating of course, but maybe the best way for REX to compete would be entering an agreement like Skywest with VA - rebuild the Ansett regional network?

REX is a lovely airline to fly with from my experience, great staff, homely feel, complimentary snacks etc and I don't want to see them get pushed out. I remember having the best pastry I have ever had in the sky on a REX flight a few years ago served with a hot cup of coffee and plenty of refills - all with a smile.
 
Not sure if saabs are pressurised or not, but a big factor would be cycles on the airframe. As already mentioned, good maintenance plus upgrades can see an aircraft having a very long life.

As a rule most turbines are pressurised that are used in RPT ops. As for replacement fleet, there is not much left apart from Dash and ATRs, or going to a ERJ145!
 
Rex don't really compete with either QFLink or Virgin, since they operate routes too small for either of the aforementioned to bother with. When a route only supports a 36 seater, there just no point for the majors to get involved. Rex has had a nice time servicing routes no-one else wants and therefore charging whatever to make a profit. The other advantage for Rex is that their routes aren't serviced or well serviced by alternative transport either. It's either drive or take Rex. I think they'll be just fine. They only lose a port when demand outgrows their capabilities.

Not completely true. Many of the routes/destinations (Burnie, Griffith, Lismore, Whyalla, Mt Gambier, Merimbula etc) they are the only carrier. But they have competitors on some of their key routes:

QF & DJ: MEL-MQL, SYD-ABX
JQ & DJ: SYD-BNK
QF only: SYD-DBO, SYD-WGA, ADL-PLO, TSV-ISA
