looking for some advice here. Went to cancel a red e-deal ticket today. The ticket cost $178, so with the fee - thought that it would give me around $100 voucher to use on another booking. I then got the option saying did I want to refund or cancel. The refund said you got the fees and taxes back only, but didn't tell you how much that was, so impossible to make a decision which way to go. Alos, I seem to remember vouchers could not be redemmed on red e-deal tickets, it always only showed the semi flex fares which sometimes may it more expensive to book than just forfeiting the fare entirely.

Any thoughts appreciated

A few thoughts:

1. Checkmytrip.com should be able to give you the break down of fare and taxes. fare and taxes should also be detailed on the tax invoice that was emailed to you.
2. A cancellation voucher is limited to being used for a fare of the same or higher cost. This is probably why you've been restricted to semi-flex in the past. Vouchers can be redeemed for red-e-deals provided that the lowest offered red-e-deal is at the same level or higher.
3. An example to expand on point 2. In the past I've purchased an O class red-e-deal. If trying to change (same concept as using a cancellation voucher) during a sale when red-e-deals were at a lower fare class then I was only offered the next grouping above red-e-deal. When the sale ended I could change to another red-e-deal.
4. Cancellation to a voucher will also incur the change fee, which was at $75 last time I checked.

I got that option before and called QF to ask about it. I was told it's a system error because red-e-deals bookings can't be refunded as per T&Cs. The CSA asked me to click on the 'refund' option to see what happens and it just transformed the booking to a voucher (with $88 cancellation fee).

I recently cancelled a return flight to LAX. and got the full amount back as a voucher ($1400) I am obligated to use by a certain date and only on flights. If I went for the refund option, I would have lost about $400 in cancellations fees.

You'll still be charged change fees, if applicable, when you book new flights.

Regarding your point 5 - there is only fee - correct? Not both a fee to cancel and then another fee when you use the voucher
Thanks

I'm not sure. You'd have to check you booking conditions. However, I just mentioned that because in the past other people have been surprised to be charged a change fee when the rebook with a cancellation voucher.

I'd expect there to not be a cancellation fee, only a change fee. But don't take my word for it.

Reviving an old thread hoping to draw on some more recent experience...

I have a booking that is red-e outbound and flex inbound I'm considering cancelling and re-booking to take advantage of the double SC offer. It's giving me the option of a refund or a voucher. I'm thinking refund... does anyone have more recent experience/ advice on this.

And making matters more complicated it was an all up fare of ~$800, but I paid the first $300 with a voucher, so my tax invoice show a total of $500. If I cancel, will I get the full $800 or just the $500 shown on the invoice?

Watch out for the cancellation fees particularly with that red e-deal being in there.
