I need a prescription filled for a pair of reading glass lens, I will provide the frames. Which city is the best for this? Any recommended opticians in either city? I have three nights in each city.

I normally get my lens in Bangkok, usually for AUD$100 per pair.

For a few years I got my glasses from this fellow Berlin Optical at IFC HKG. Can't say he was cheap but the service and turnaround time was always excellent. I then worked out that my private HI covered all things glasses so I just go local these days.

$100 aud should be enough to get normal reading lenses done in Australia, and you are then eligible to claim off your health fund ( if you've paid them the four figure premiums during the year!)

Prescription spectacles are very costly in Australia. I checked at my private HI last week and lens would set me back by aud323 and frames are costly also. One pair frame i liked was aud404 and i checked online to find this was sold in UK for stg115.

It will cost me approximately $280 (per pair) for progressive lens in Australia (after the HI rebate).

As a result of cataract surgery I was attempting to be pro-active in replacing my eyeglasses. I supplied the frames and got both driving (tinted yellowish) and sun (tinted dark brown) glasses from one of the largest eye hospitals in Colombo. The refraction exam was perhaps not up to the Australian standard, but the result was remarkably close to the exam I eventually had completed locally and perfectly suitable for distance vision. From order, delivery took a week.

Each pair of lenses cost about 10% of what my bifocal lenses cost me in Australia (after insurance). And half the price of what I paid for a simple lens replacement in Kota Kinabalu. It was suggested (when I queried a couple of internet locations) that prices in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur would be comparable to Australia.

I would be interested in reading what the OP finds in the end.

Happy wandering

Fred
