Re: New Member from MEL

Greetings all. I have been reading the forum via a mobile app but have only just signed up. Based in Canberra I am a lowly Gold - desperately looking for ways to make it to elusive Platinum again by the end of March. Haven't been doing much work travelling recently (a bit of a budget squeeze) and do not get points for work (SCs yes luckily) but have done a bit of private flying over the year. Still a few hundred SC short at my reckoning with work etc by then so will be looking for ideas.

Hi love_the_life,

Welcome to AFF.

You deserve your own thread so I have moved your post to make it so :!:

Welcome to the AFF Community love_the_life! I'm based in Canberra too and everything is so expensive here! Thankfully the fare prices are still reasonable though!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Welcome to AFF! Have you read about status runs, JASAs etc.? They are a good way to make up status credits if you need them at the end of your membership year. However with good planning throughout the year you should be able to requalify. As a general rule, don't fly direct if you can help it as you get more status credits by taking more flights with different numbers. Where is most of your travel to?

Hi Mattg
Thanks for the information - I have a JASA coming up this week and am looking for another couple - good point about the different flight numbers - I do try to go through another port when trying to maximise points but sometimes it is not cost effective.

That's good, you should have no trouble getting a few hundred more SCs by March if you keep this up. I find that out of CBR you can almost always get indirect flights for barely any extra cost (sometimes it's actually cheaper) if you're going aanywhere other than SYD or MEL. For example, if going to BNE you can usually connect through SYD for about $7 more and get an extra 10SCs (more if you're in J). Another thing to look out for is 'flexible' fares (if you're travelling in Y). I wouldn't pay too much mmore for one but if the price difference between that and the red-e-deal is small enough, it's an easy way to pick up double the SCs.

Stick around here and you'll be an expert on all this in no time! Good luck :)

The Canberra-Sydney-Hobart route is a good SC earner for very little extra $ and because you have to fly north before flying south (as opposed to going CBR-MEL-HBA) you can get an extra 15 SC even on a Red-E compared to going direct. And still gets you to HBA in time to partake of the fermented ginger beer at Salamanca markets!

Good to see other Kambraites here.

Welcome aboard, I've just escaped the clutches of CBR and am now enjoying sunny MEL with a real international airport. :)
