Hi all,

my parents do maybe 2 or 3 economy trips MEL-HKG a year. So far they've got MPC Silver each and about 80K in miles. We're finding redeeming a little difficult with the points expiring every 3 years.
If they were to stop crediting the miles to CX, but to QF instead - will they still collect status credits?

thanks.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Are you parents flying CX or QF?

If they are flying QF and crediting to QF they will earn 60 SC per trip on discount economy flights - not enough to earn or retain QF silver.

If flying CX but crediting to QF they will still earn some QF SC's due to the Oneworld alliance (but someone else will need to advise how many)

Edit; Have a look here regarding CX SC earn and also here

sorry, forgot to state that they fly CX.
I guess that's the thing, so far they probably do Just enough to maintain silver on MPC. They grown accustom to lounge access, but I wonder whether in the long run it will be better to credit to Qantas.
A. To stockpile the points
B Perhaps better redemption opportunities.. ?

Have they considered American Airlines?

Might be best to look at a few OW FF programs...

Crediting to AAdvantage or BA Exec Club would be limited by the 4 flights with own prefix rule for status. However BA avios can be useful for expensive shorthaul and you don't need a huge balance to find a redemption

The Simpler & Fairer changes to SC earn go against QFF when flying CX. If status not a consideration the only real benefits are the ability to top-up easily and nonexpiry.

Alaska Mileage Plan has good redemption rates but tricky to top up

With the lounge access for Silver, ability to top up with Amex MR and low taxes in and out of HKG , MPC has a lot going for it in this situation

I think that in their case it could be best to stick with CX for the status benefits. I don't know any other program that offers Silver level members lounge access.

It may just be about getting smarter with redeeming points. IMHO Asia Miles is a pretty good program, despite the 3 year point expiry rule. What difficulties are they having with redeeming the points?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

They're just not well organised well enough to redeem ahead. But I gotta say availability 2 weeks ahead always looks great!

Might just ask them to stick with what they have now.

Thanks again everyone.

Under the new MPC rules two or three economy trips HKG -> Oz each year will be only enough to retain MPC Green status (each direction will earn 30 or 35 depending on the exact (assuming normal) fare class)

Use the points for an online request for a cabin upgrade. Some like PEY - some don't but it does allow for a better sleeping environment if flying on a read-eye.

Happy wandering

Fred
