QF9 tomorrow is really QF8009 - what's going on?

I am booked on QF9 tomorrow (only as far as SIN), but since booking a bit over a week ago, it has not let me select seats for QF9 and now when I try OLCI, it is listing the flight as QF8009 rather than QF9 and says that I can't check in.

I thought flight numbers like that were usually used when a flight was delayed to the following day so that they didn't end up with two QF9s on the one day... My flight has not been delayed.

Does anyone know what is going on? Is it related to the Volcano issues in EU?

QF8009 is the flight going SYD-MEL-SIN.

It has been named as such to avoid confusion with QF009 which goes MEL-SIN.

Thanks ejb - do you know why It's originating in SYD now?

I would have thought that with the EU issues at the moment, there would be no need for additional SYD-SIN (via MEL) capacity. If it was a matter of repositioning, then why not call SYD-MEL QF8009 and then MEL-SIN as QF9 per usual?

There is usually SYD-SIN and MEL-SIN but as most of the pax that use those services are enroute to LHR they have cancelled SYD-SIN and combined the two for pax terminating in SIN.

AFAIK if SIN was not your final destination they are not allowing you to go.

Last few days they've been cancelling QF5 but keeping QF32. Conceivable there could be overflow though hence QF 8009 down to MEL.. (on first day they cancelled 5/9 and just routed 32 via MEL)

It's a combination of things. They are only running enough flights to fill the seat needs in both directions to Singapore. There are no hotel rooms available in Singapore, so if that's not your final destination, don't go there.

This morning there was a 10 and a 6. The 10 had about 250 pax (though a very large %) were crew, and I'm told the 6 was full. Today it looks like there will be a flight from Melb and another from Syd.

8009 is simply an amalgamated flight. Normally the 80 numbers are ferries...a delayed flight is 'delta'. But, they can really use any flight number that takes their fancy.

The QF crew hotel in SIN has rooms .......@ $947 a night or 30% more than rack! Frankly hotel chains that do that should be put on a names and shamed list for taking advantage of a situation that could not have been forseen!

The hotels were already pretty full this week due to conferences. I was looking last week (before the ash) and seeing upwards of $S500 for some hotels.

I believe this is commonly referred to as "commercial reality" - practically every type of organisation (airlines included) raise their prices when demand exceeds supply.

And in a way we should be thankful that they adapt like this. I say this because when the pendulum swings the other way, bargains are to be had!

That is true but QF will surely remember the hotels that jacked up prices over rack rate and when times are harder perhaps they will support the fairer hotels that only went to rack rate.

Howver it is a free society and they can charge what they want, we however are also free to choose where we stay.

Oh that rate is what QF are paying, Silly on QF for not locking in an agreed rate and min number of rooms :)

They more than likely do, when I had a negotiated rate with SPG it was only good until a certain number of rooms remained then it was rack rate.

I believe its called profiteering, in Australia its illegal and certainly not commercial reality, I am not across the Singapore laws so cannot really comment, however I will say not all hotels are doing it and for those that look at business with long term views rather than short term gain, I salute you! Given no doubt that the "commercial reality" will end up being paid by many insurances companies, I think its safe to say when can expect travel insurance premiums to rise as a commercial reality.

No one would begrudge a hotel trying to make money, but there are limits, and I think they have been broken, however going by the lack of news on the matter maybe I am flying solo, so be it :p

I very much doubt it would be anything like what QF are paying. They have long term contracts at all the hotels they use.

Flew QF1 yesterday as QF8001 on VH-OJA (2-class only :()
J only 60% full, Y probably same.

Note previous seat selection on QF1 deleted, even Platinum desk could not allocate - was airport control only (although a CL on the flight got a call)
